😳 I KNOW this is definately annoying to always see and deal with and I have tried to avoid making a thread like this... but I am seeking advice as to whether to apply this cycle or not...
I keep debating and could really use some other opinions from other pre-dents and people that are familiar with the whole process... as opposed to family let's say lol

My undergrad stats are:
overall GPA: 3.40
science GPA: 3.30
non-science: 3.79
bio/chem/phys: 2.67
DAT: 20/20/20 and 25 RC
(By the beginning of August these numbers will go up slightly and BCP ~ 2.82)

I know my BCP is lacking and have enrolled in a 1 year Masters (SMP) this fall to help that and show my capabilities...

I have volunteer work, shadowing, sports and other community involvement, should have decent LOR and personal statement

My question is whether or not to try to apply or if you think it is truly a waste of time and money...

But if I do have somewhat of a chance... I do not want to miss that either! I would really love to start dental school right after Masters

Thoughts please?

Thank you very much in advance

BTW, I am Canadian

Canadian with a 2.6 BCP? I wouldn't apply...but thats just me

Yeah...If it makes any difference, by the beginning of August the BCP should be ~ 2.82... Do you think this is a waste, even if I kill first quarter of Masters and submit in academic update?

I don't know. Academic update period begins mid November, it might be too late by then.

Out of curiosity, does being Canadian automatically make it more difficult? And, is BCP considered much more important than the other GPAs? I can see in his situation, his BCP is substantially lower, so is your comment situational or a general standard with all applicants comparing BCP, sGPA, etc?

(I wasn't even aware of such a thing as BCP until I came to this site 😉

I would recalculate your BCP...how is it so much lower than science gpa?

In any case, I would still apply. Your DAT score is not too bad. Should be a go.

Thanks for your reply.
The reason is because it has a MUCH less amount of courses within it... basically pre-reqs + biochem and I did get a D on Orgo II and have to re-take 🙁
My science includes all my kinesiology, math and earth science courses!

Well Canadian applicants are internationals. Just by that notion, its a little bit harder for them.

For 1) There is no such thing as in-state friendlies for them. Some of us USA applicant have such schools that will accept a great majority of their class from home state

For 2) There are Canadian friendly dental schools, but even those don't accept THAT many Canadians (makes sense, USA dental school's obligation is to pump out dentists for this country, so they have to limit how many internationals they accept). Since they accept only a limited number, they tend to go with the higher stats (duh)

And yes, I do believe BCP gets a slightly heavier look when compared to sGPA and overall. Obviously, all 3 are important, but If I had a choice to make one of them really high, it would be BCP.

I know using a single school isn't enough proof, but I know for a fact Detroit Mercy evaluates applicants as follows:
DAT > BCP > sGPA > overall GPA > heavy of undergrad curriculum > and then few others I can't remember

Any other opinions?
I'll take all I can get... I want to see what the general census is
