Hello! I am a Sophomore at the University of Pittsburgh. I have taken most of the Pre-Req's for DO school and am planning to take my MCAT's in the Fall.

As it lays:
Bio 1- A
Bio 2- B
Chem 1- B
Chem 2- B-
O. Chem 1- B+
Physics 1- A
Physics 2- A

I was thinking about retaking the Bio 2 as my teacher was horrendous. My science gpa as it stands is a 3.41 but if i retook bio 2 and received an A it would be back to around a 3.5. I am looking to go to DO school preferably PCOM. I will be taking O Chem 2 over the summer along with biochem. Just wanted some advice thank you for your time.

I went to Pitt also. Hopefully you got Bandik for OChem. I suggest you retake your gen chem elsewhere for grade replacement. I don't think you can take it at Pitt since you already took Ochem. Bio is fine. B won't hurt you so don't waste time retaking it.

You should not retake any class that is above a C+. Just do well in your junior and senior years and those grades will do you just fine. A 3.41 is definitely good enough to be looked at by any DO school in the country.

I did get George he is a great person and is in fact writing me a letter of rec for DO applications as well as Rehab Science school which will be my intended major. Sadly Gen Chem 2 didn't got so well since I got a first year professor and her teaching methods weren't the greatest in my opinion. But thank you so much for replying

Thank you! I looked at all the class profiles and my sgpa was average it just helps to see someone who has already been through it reply.

For reals... a B- is not bad at all... Maybe if you were trying to get into Harvard, but for the majority of DO schools and even most MD schools, busting out a few B- classes are not that bad, especially early on in your degree.

if you have the chance before mcats take genetics with Oke and biochem (i forget prof name but a woman)

I think I even had maybe 3 C's and 1 D on my transcript and I received multiple acceptances. So just focus your efforts on doing better in the future. If you get a C then you can start thinking about retakes, but even then you dont have to if the rest of your grades are fine.

You are correct it was my Freshman year and I really still didn't learn how to study until I hit O chem this year. I just would like to adjust now before its to late, just double checking!

Zapanta for biochem per chance?
yes thats her. I had them and they are both great professors. I got A- in genetics and A in biochem. I think these classes will help you on the new mcat

Thanks man! I was planning on taking microbio next semester and ochem 2 with george over the summer and bio chem with zapanta over the summer. I wasn't really considering genetics because my schedule is kind of full with some other pre-req's for my major. Would you say genetics > micro bio?

retake a B? what is happening to this world?

i'll cut you some slack because you say you powerlift. powerlifters unite!

I was a microbio major so again I took microbio with Oke. If you cannot take genetics then its fine. You can learn from the mcat course. Its not required and the topics from genetics are fairly simple.

Its pretty much the only thing that keeps me sane. I always stress myself out over if I will get in, so lifting heavy weights and putting them back down relieve some tension. Good luck if you do my friend! and good luck in med school!
