I have posted this thread in "India" part of this IMG page, but did not get more than 1 reply.

I am 35 year-old doing Histopathology(Anatomic Pathology) training in UK. I graduated from med school in 2000 and now I am into 3rd year of my training in UK, 3.5years more to go. I am thinking about taking MLEs and getting into IM in US. Am I being toooooo optimistic? Any chances for me to get into IM? Considering my age, 6 years from graduation (will be 8 by the time I will apply for match in 2008) and changing specialty? I am not a UK citizen.

Well, IM is not terribly competitive at most places and often is much less traditional than other fields, so foreign physicians with work experience can be highly valued.

Of course, they will want to know why you are changing fields, but I presume you can answer that.

My feeling is that if this is what you want to do, you will never know if you'd be successful unless you tried. SO why not take the USMLEs and give it a shot? The worst it could be is an expensive "no" but I'll bet if you did well, you'd be suprised at the outcome.
