Hello I was wondering If I could get some advice on redoing all pre-reqs so I have a solid foundation to study for the MCAT.

The last time I took the MCAT (2016) I scored a disasterous 494. I've been working as a med assistant for a couple of years now and am planning on trying again.

I was wondering if it is feasible to self teach each subject required for the MCAT (Cell Bio, Micro bio, gen bio, chem I&II, orgo II &II, physics I &II, genetics I & II, and biochem I &II. I don't know what sources to even use though, Idk if Khan academy would be enough.

And then I'd do MCAT prep after that, maybe an MCAT class. I'll take literally any advice people would be willing to give, I feel hopeless.

Extra info: 4.4 ish GPA, male, URM. extracurriculars are fairly good

What's the acronym/emoji for confused look while tilting my head to the side?

4.4 and 494?

Conventional SDN wisdom is not to retake classes you don't need to (ie - don't retake anything you got a C or better in). And, with a 4.4, I'm guessing you got As (none of my universities gave any extra GPA points for A+ and AMCAS doesn't either, so you may want to figure out what your AMCAS GPA is)

You can certainly self-re-teach - you probably know yourself best, but if a 494 surprised you, then perhaps you need better MCAT prep that includes lots of practice tests.

You could audit classes to re-learn. If you got an A the first time and a 494 on MCAT, I'd be worried that taking any of these classes for a grade a second time opens up the possibility of not getting an A again.

You could take an MCAT prep course as refresher of the material and for test taking tips.

I don't know what a 4.4 is either, but I highly recommend you take an MCAT prep course before retrying. Some schools will average your MCAT's which means you will need to knock the second one out of the park to be remotely competitive.

duplicate post - also on the MCAT forum
