Hi Everyone!
I'm a 3rd year medical student. I have some feedback on my rotations.
Family Practice at St.Barnabas in Bronx, NY is a 3/5. It's good points are: work directly with attendings because there is no residency, get lots of practice with H+P's, you see the patient, present them, and write the note. Attendings are decent, some more aloof than others but overall good teachers. Bad points are: get thrown into clinical work at 8am on day 1. After a few weeks, work gets tedious, everyone seems to have diabetes, hypertension, asthma. The patient population consists of poor, non-english speaking, and at times uncooperative people.
Ob/Gyn at Lutheran Hospital in Brooklyn, NY was a 4+/5. It's good points are: First hand clinical experience (in 6 weeks I delivered 30 babies by myself) and assisted in 20 c-sections. Residents are friendly, willing to teach, and let you do just about everything. Bad points: Often there is a lot of scut (drawing bloods, taking it to the lab), most on-call nights are busy with usually no sleep. The proposed lecture at 6:30am never happens. But overall, if you're thinking about going into OB, don't pass on this rotation.
Medicine at St. Clare's in NYC is a 5/5 if you want to know what it's like to be an intern and a 2/5 if you hate floor work, busy schedule, and independence. Good points: you will learn first-hand how it feels to be a medical intern. There is no residency program so it's you, a rotating intern, and an attending. Attendings are great, willing to teach and take rounds very importantly. Bad points: busy on-call nights, lot of responsibility and independence, blood drawing and IVs up the wazzu!! Overall, great for anyone who wants a realistic taste of internal medicine in NYC!!
Surgery at Lutheran Hospital in Brooklyn, NY is 4/5 if you're looking for an easy surgery rotation and a 2/5 if you want to go into surgery. Good points: only have to do 40 surgeries in a 12-week period, you can sleep all day everyday in the library if you want, if you want to be hard core you can but no one forces you. Bad points: no specialty surgeries, residents are very poor caliber and horrible at teaching. The attendings yell more than they actually teach. There's an oral exam at the end.
Well that's it. I'll continue to update.
