Curious to see if anyone can shed any insight on what schools might consider me as a serious candidate. I am a reapplicant, and was fortunate enough to get a few interviews last cycle (U Iowa, UC Davis, UCLA/Drew, and Ohio State), but I also got a lot of pre-interview rejections, something like 14. Furthermore, none of the interviews have materialized yet, and probably won't. With the new cycle in flight now I am looking to apply to schools that would consider someone like myself. I will of course be using the MSAR, but I think there are also benefits from taking advice from someone who has been there too.
List of Schools: ???, some that are friendly to OOS, URM, with average numbers and ECs.
Lastly I will go international before I go D.O.
The breakdown:
CA Resident
Graduated from UC Davis- B.S. Biology
URM: Mexican-American
Probably non-traditional applicant: left university for four years, explored other health care careers, nursing and athletic training at local JC.
GPAc: 3.5
GPAs: 3.3 (Two really bad quarters, upward trend from there)
MCAT: 29- P.S. 9, V.R. 8, B.S. 12 (Scheduled to retake in June)
ECs:
Shadowing Pedatrician at hospital- Summer of '08 and '0940 hrs
Assistant to youth minister at my church: 2004-2005, 4 hrs/week for 9 months
Athletic training internship- 2007, 1 semester; 10 hrs/week
Volunteer at hospital: 2010-present; 70 hrs
Volunteer at Community Health Center clinic- assistant to behaviorlist at support group sessions: 2010-present, 2 hrs/week
Volunteer at Parish: 2010-present, 3 hrs/week in the office, and major events
Lab TA at JC: Fall 2009, intro to physio- 4 hrs/week, Spring 2010, intro to anatomy- 7 hrs/week
Plan to start working as a pharmacy tech by mid June (still waiting on license)
One semester of organic research- Spring 2010
