Hello,

I am a first semester sophomore at UNC and the advising office is completely unhelpful. i need to know what i need to take with the goal of getting into medical school. I am a Biology major B.S.

Taken: Basic chem 1 and 2, Biology 101, Cell and developmental biology, genetics and molecular biology, physics 116 (basic calc based mechanics), Biology 252 (anatomy and physiology), Biol 262 (global ecology), am finished with foreign language requirements

next semester: i have only one science class scheduled (biology 201, evolution and ecology)

planned courses:

summer sophomore year: organic 1, maybe math 232 (calc 2)

junior year first semester : organic 2

junior year second semester: physics 117?

what am i missing? what do i need? I feel like i should be taking something more important next semester that im forgetting to account for...

You have your year of English? A few schools want you to have behavioral science. Statistics? Biochem?

Be sure you check the requirments of the schools you're most interested in, in case some have unique requirments.

yeah i got english out of the way but havent taken statistics or biochem... is that a common requirement or just a very select few schools?

By the way, do all the core sciences need to be completed by the time of application junior year? for example could i take physics 117 (gen physics 2 electromagnetism and waves) senior year?

You should finish your core requirements before you take the MCAT. Technically, you don''t need to complete requirements before you apply, but you do list them as future coursework on your Primary application so the school knows you plan to take them. You do need to complete them before matriculating in med school.

The MSAR is your best resource for the required and recommended courses for each school. There is an extract of it stickied at the top of the "What are my chances" Forum, called School Selection spreadsheet. Your reference library or premed advising office should have the actual book.
