I'm wondering the same thing. What exactly do we get out of checking "yes" to this?

Er... why is everyone so upset today? 🙁

From the AMCAS Instruction Manual that's been provided (pg. 20)

If you wish to authorize AMCAS to release information about your application to the designated advisor(s) at the school(s) you attended, indicate "Yes." The school-designated advisor(s) have met AMCAS-established requirements and are bound by confidentiality. Information transferred includes your personal/demographic information, MCAT scores, GPAs, the names of your letter writers, and your letter of evaluation types, the names of any other schools you have attended, the medical schools to which you have applied and what action those schools have taken, and the status of your application with AMCAS. Additionally, checking this option allows AMCAS staff to discuss your application with the designated advisor(s) at this school.

Now it doesn't directly say what happens if you choose "No", but it seems it wouldn't be a problem, since authorizing AMCAS to release your app info to advisors is something completely under the applicant's control/desires. So it's not an obligation, and you would be fine selecting "No" to Advisor Release.

I think ChrisMack is wondering if saying no would be viewed down upon by adcoms or something similar which of course would not be in the manual. And while this may be slightly neurotic, it's not like you can blame them considering this application could set the course of the rest of your life and having accurate information on how to do it and it could mean the difference between acceptance and joy or failure and regret...

Please remain civil towards each other. If you don't like the response you receive from another user, please use the ignore button. If you do so, you will never see a response from that person again.

Jumping in to say that I selected "no" on my app and suffered no consequences that I know of.

I didn't even know my advisor. Why the hell would I want them to know anything about what I want to do with my life?

the main idea is that it will give school advisors some data which can be good

I delayed my app for a year because the advisor said I didn't have enough clinical experience and later from much better sources I found out she was VERY wrong about my chances... in any case, I always wanted her to know she done steered me wrong

students don't always give feedback to the people helping them on the app trail.... goes without saying, you should contact your LOR writers with outcomes
