Apparently my loan consolidation through American Education Services was a "2-step process". I go through this whole ordeal July of 2005 of applying to defer my consolidated loan payments and, after three attempts I finally get it defered.

Then suddenly this month I get a bill . . . apparently my loan is in repayment again! No explanation. I call, and apparently the 2nd step of my consolidation went through. Not only do I have to reapply for the deferment, but for some reason I now owe over $13,000 more than I did after the first consolidation step.

I have not found my telephone calls to these people very helpful, so I thought I'd run it by you guys first to see if you have any experience with this matter.

Thoughts?

From what I have read of the 2-step process, federal direct loans are paid off in the first step, and other loans in the second. That would explain the additional $13K, but I have no records of any other student loans other than my federal direct! I am baffled. It looks like I will have to call.
