I'm a junior with a 2.9 GPA Neuroscience major....I'm trying to weigh out my options for what I should after I graduate in Fall 2010. I want to get into med school eventually, but I know that with a GPA this low, it's improbable. Anyone have any suggestions as to what route I should go about. I was thinking of doing a Masters in Neuro, but will that really help me in my application process later on?

I have a lot of research experience (3 years) with two fellowships, but I'm just not a good test taker. What are the best options for me? Should I work in a lab for a year? Should I work at a hospital for a year? Go to grad school? What will really make me a better candidate when I apply? Considering a low GPA, I know I will have to do stellar in whatever path I choose after undergrad.

Thanks...

Consider doing a postbac since those classes will be counted into your undergrad GPA. Unless you really want the masters i don't think that this will really help admission wise. Also consider DO schools since I think they replace your grades if you retake the class.

A masters degree in Neuro will not help your application to allopathic (MD) med schools, but if you got a high GPA, it would be averaged into your application GPA by osteopathic schools, where it could help you.

If you can get a good MCAT score, you might get accepted to an SMP (Special Masters Program) which is a 1-2 year fixed-sequence of classwork specifically meant to compensate for a low GPA. Many of these have a linkage into a med school, in fact, you often take classes along with their medical students. For more information, see the Post-baccalaureate forum. I believe you would have to get your undergrad GPA up to at least a 3.0 first.

thank you very much...i'll have to weigh out my options.
