I'm going to be applying next year and a bit on the older side; 24 now, would be 25 when I start or even older if I don't get in the first application cycle. Most people that go in are between 21-23, I feel kind of discouraged. As if I waited too long to do what I wanted. Some people have told me it isn't smart to start something like medicine at my age because I'll waste my life away in school and won't get out until I'm well into my 30s (including school + residency). How do you guys feel about this, am I too old to try to get in? I guess I just need a confidence boost :/

This seems like such an obvious answer i'm afraid you are a troll. You are definitely not too old for medical school. My school has people who look like they are easily in their 30s or 40s. There are people who make mid-career decisions to switch into medicine and there are many people who do not get in the first time and apply again making them your age.

Sorry, seriously didn't mean to troll. You can look up my history with posts, I ask honest questions to try and get helpful answers for my upcoming cycle. Just certain people in my life aren't very supportive of my decision to switch from pharmacy to medicine and it's difficult at times, I just needed to rant a little I guess.

I think the average age at most schools is 23-24, if you're 1-2 years above that, you're still relatively young for entering med school. There are people in my class in their mid-30's, and people in the classes above me in their 40's. A lot of people were fully into careers for several years before deciding to switch it up and go back to school. If you really want to go into medicine, your age is the least of your worries right now.

Don't worry. You're not too old.

I love this banana dancing thing. Also, no 25 years old is not too old to do anything, including medical school.

You guys make me laugh 🙂 thanks, I needed that

Not a problem. With this time being a panic season, it's always good to be all smiles.. Of course, things can go wrong in some threads. :scared:

Well... there are 62 now, so I think 17 are relieved.

17 were 22 year olds relieved that they won't be the oldest in their class.

i am in a very similar position and i feel your pain. i will be 25 when/if i get in, and to me, that seems like an eternity from where i stand right now.

Dude. I will be 42 and accepted at three schools and canceled more than nine interviews. If I am not too old, then you are really not. Check out the non-traditional forum for some idea about how many old people are on here. Even though us old people don't know what the Internet is, or how to use it. Sometimes I wonder how I can get the computer turned on in the morning. I keep trying to load the old reel to reel tapes, but I can't find the place to put them... Just kidding, but I did use the old school 5 1/4 inch floppy disks before the 3.5 inch disks came around. Ha ha. My first computer didn't even have a hard drive. DOS was loaded off of a boot disk. Windows was not even invented yet.

Oh and for the record I will turn 25 shortly after matriculation. The older females in my class will like that I'm not a child. The young ones will be intrigued by my vast life experience.

My girlfriend likely won't approve.

Don't worry...by the time you are done with your residency, you'll be able to practice independently for far more years than you could ever possibly want.

it isn't that easy to tell the physical difference between a 22 year old and a 25/26 year old, right?

It has been on the interview trail.

really? that's surprising. sigh...

Most interview days started with us introducing ourselves to each other (name, school, etc). I could usually guess who was still in undergrad and who had already graduated.

what about 25/26? it gets worse and worse as the number goes up and up.

It really depends on how well you've aged.

What gets worse and worse? Medical schools like mature candidates....not that age is correlated with maturity really...

I think he doesn't want to stand out as the "old" guy.

I usually can't tell the difference between a 22 year old and a 25/26 year old. it depends on the person though. my brother is 27 with a babyface and he still gets carded, he looks 22 at most
