I shadowed a Neurosurgeon a few weeks ago and when I talked to his receptionists they said that I would not be going to the OR with him, I would only be shadowing him in the clinic. When I asked the doctor why this was he said he did not know why I couldn't. What do you all know about the age that's required to shadow a neurosurgeon in the OR. Thank you in advance.

I shadowed one when I was 22. My guess is that it has nothing to do with age, but rather regulations set by the doctor and/or hospital.

Alright, I plan on shadowing him again in the future. Maybe I can talk to his receptionist more then.

Most likely this. I shadowed in an OR with CT surgeon when I was was 17 but wasn't allowed in the OR with a general surgeon at 21.

So what would you advise I do? Would it be wise to contact someone at the hospital and ask about the regulations or maybe when I shadow him again ask about it then?

Try asking his secretary why you can't go into the OR. If you really want to go into the OR and you can't seem to wrangle it with this dude, try talking to another surgeon in another field and see if you make any headway.

Last year I spent 200 hours volunteering and shadowing in various ortho ORs, including trauma cases.

I was not allowed to shadow a ****ing dermatologist.

There isn't a hard and fast rule to anything, it seems.

Life ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

This surgeon may just not want anyone shadowing in the OR. Don't push it. Some surgical procedures, especially in neurosurgery, are very technically demanding, The surgeon may simply not want the distraction. Much neurosurgery is done under a microscope, so if you watch a video of the surgery you will see exactly the same thing you will see in the OR.

Rules and regs like that are usually set by the management/administration +/- physician input. Asking the surgeon would be the simplest way to go about it. Just ask if he allows or not, nothing to it! If not, learn stuff in clinic or email another surgeon (different field or location probably).

Is everything on your MDApps true? If so Jesus F. Christ.
Yes everything is pretty accurate. Maybe a little TOO accurate (I'll be taking it down eventually before people starting figuring out who I am) but yeah

Ok, I would have to ask his secretaries. I asked him and he seemed confused and said he has no idea why I couldn't shadow him. I totally glossed over asking the secretaries so I will talk to them.

It's usually a hospital thing or administrative red tape. Usually if you talk directly with the surgeon and ask they can jump all of that. Just depends though.
