Well, I'll be there in June! Starting May 27th right?

most dentists who join the military while in school are purely motivated by money, so since the army doesn't offer a signing bonus, there will be less Army....which i think says more about those who join the Army (for the most part, but not always. i know there are some who have prior service with the Navy or AF that are still loyal to those branches....not to start a fight over this...).

I give props to those dental students that are brave enough to dare the army! Not me...

Well the AF doesnt offer any type of a signing bonus...I doubt they will. I will say that from what I have seen thus far, those that take military scholarships are completely driven by money...it is unfortunate but at the same time it is their decision. They will use the military and the military will use them. I personally konw this is what I wanted to do. My father is AF and my uncle will be retired this July from the AF as well. I do have family in other branches but AF is basically what I grew up with. I'm glad I chose to this route and while there will be sacrifices I might have to make...it is still where my loyalties reside.

I was accepted for the AF HPSP (for 4 years) in Oct. Im gonna be commissioned soon in Feb...However, I heard about the 20k bonus from the Navy and I did start my application with the Navy also around the same time with the AF, but I didn't finish it (when the 20k bonus didn't come out yet!). Is it too late to try to apply for the Navy now? Is it OK if I say "No" to the AF if in case I get accepted for the Navy (I already accepted the scholarship offer from the AF)? The 20k sounds very good to me and it doesn't matter to me what branch I go anyway...I just didn't know...Thanks for reading this!

Until you're sworn in, you can still change your mind, and yes it's okay if you do so. Please do so! lol I found out yesterday that I'm 13th on the alternate list for the AF.

I also just commissioned with the Air Force. I'll be at COT this May.

I've already started running on the tread mill to get prepped.

i just dont understand why people think the military is so terrible and life threatening if you're going into dentistry.. seriously.... ur gonna be a dentist.

dentist but WHERE ?

so could be everywhere even Irak
I find this quite

Why? A dentist hasn't been killed in wartime (due to war) since Korea I believe? Is that correct?

People just don't give the military a break.
What I don't understand is that people reject the military outright. Their scholarship offer should be scrutinized. It should at least make people think long and hard. Even if they reject it at the very least consider seriously.

The other thing people should be doing is considering it as a long term career choice. People walk into this as if " I'll pay my dues and move on" sort of deal. I'd understand if they had to get out of the military because of family or they feel they got everything they wanted out of it.

Also there is a possibility that things may settle down a little in Iraq within the next 4 yrs. The military may be stretched but if does this happen the deployment time will be cut and units will be given more time to rest, refit, and be combat ready again.

Better get your act together because if you say "NO" to one, the others might say "NO" as well. These scholarships are competative, and the guys that sit on the acceptance board know who you are and if you recieved an AF one--so, there is no guarantee that you will get another. I sat on those boards and if I saw that you had turned down one service just to try to get more bucks from the one I was in you wouldn't be accepted.

I don't think the Navy will be saying no to anyone who has a desire to serve and meets the minimum requirements. They can't even come close to meeting their recruiting goals for dental HPSP. That's why they are offering the bonus in the first place.

Actually i have heard that they are probably going to reach their (NAVY)quota this year so it may be a good idea to get on it ASAP

Guess the bonus must have made a huge difference. I got accepted in July of last year and they still had a ton of spots left. I swore in the day before classes started. While I got the bonus, I heard about it so late in the process that it didn't really play a role in my decision (I had already decided to do it), but hey, no complaints about an unexpected 20k.
