hey sup everybody,

i'm trying to find somebody whos using the airforce dental scholarship. it just seems like a very good deal, and you know for a fact you cant get sent to iraq or any other war zone, since the airforce doesnt even have bases in iraq! so i'm trying to find somebody who can give me an un-biased view of what life is like as a dentist in the airforce. thanks everybody

Omar,
Do a little more homework. You most certainly get sent to Iraq as an AF dentist.

Go to the military forum on the graduate medical section of the forums page. Look at the sticky threads up top to see the details of HPSP scholarships for all the services. Beware, lots of mil md's, not dentists post on that forum, so not everything they say about mil med applies to mil dent.

Do your homework, ask lots of questions, and don't sign anything until you know exactly what you are getting into.

Good luck!

Omar, another place to check out would be Dental Town. I was seriously considering going with the Army's scholarship - I even got a physical, signed all the paperwork, everything short of sending it to a review board. Then I checked on dental town, and there were two or three dentists who had done the HPSP program who said you should NOT do it for the money. Those guys will probably be able to give you a better idea of what it's like, since they've completed school and are either on active duty or have finished it.

I am currently on the Air Force HPSP scholarship and coming from a military family its great! Do put careful consideration into what branch of service you choose. Thus, if you choose the Air Force the personel you will care for will be on bases supporting air craft, Army=infantry, Navy=boats, and don't even consider the other one (unless you want to be cannon fodder). Therefore as an Air Force dentist it is highly unlikely you will be sent to Iraq, but not 100%. With that said, don't bank on the Air Force, since it is the most competitive and difficult to get in to.

Now the positive: My wife and I both want to live in Europe, and having no debt was a plus too! You will not be able to develop your skills better anywhere else, the range of experiences in the military is second to none. You will be faster and more competent than your colleagues that went directly to private practice.

Hope this helps, and feel free to contact me with questions.

Best,

Adam
