Alabama Schools Thread Part 2!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I don't know if it's the best idea to call or not, but it's not like you have to tell them who you are. I'm gonna give it a couple more weeks, but i might call afterwards. Anyways, I'll make sure to post if i see or hear of any movement.
Good luck.

i too am waiting to hear from the waitlist. i have friends from last year who heard the last week of may, around the 30th, so i agree about next week being important. i would call, but i think julie recognizes my voice and is sick of me by now.

Are ya'll on the uppper third of the waitlist? It seems like everyone i've talked to is on the upper third. I have yet to hear from someone on the middle or lower thirds.

I am on the upper third also. How many people do you know on the upper third? Hopefully you just have alot of smart friends.

upper 1/3 here as well. i dont' know of anyone being accepted either. worries me a little, it's almost june. i hate waiting....

how many and what kind of recommendations are needed for USA?

I just called UAB, and they said that there hasn't been any movement of the alternate list yet. Then she said they were definately going to be using the list, but she wasn't sure when yet. That's all she'd say so I don't know how far they expect to go or when movement will start, but this is at least hopeful.

I just saw on UAB's website that they have an update. They posted it yesterday and they say they are currently accepted people from the upper third of the waitlist. They say that withdrawls are moving slowly so they cannot predict when more people will be accepted. Has anyone heard of anyone accepted yet?? At least we got an update....😳

i love the rate of "less than one per week."

yeah, really...i mean, i haven't even heard of any actually movement yet either

Do you think that perhaps they haven't really accepted anyone from the waitlist, but are in the process of doing so?

That's what I was thinking, but who knows.

just wondering if anyone had heard anything yet (from the waitlist)

I just got accepted by email! Hopefully yall did too, good luck to everyone else waiting to hear!

yay! congrats! it's finally moving!

I got in today off the waitlist! I got the email!! Good luck to all of you and I hope that you have heard good news as well! 😀:luck:

Hey Maddomc,

in your email, was the acceptance of admissions document, financial aid, and technical standards document attached.... it says at the bottom of the letter that there are enclosures... but there was nothing attached to my email...

No, they were'nt, but I think they will come in the mail in the net few days or so. I'm not positive about that though.

You get all the enclosures with your official letter of acceptance in the mail, so don't worry about them not being included in the email. Congrats to all who are getting in from the waitlist!

This question is for all my fellow waitlisters. Do we need to update our AMCAS contact info. (ie. e-mail address) on the 2008 AMCAS page, or do we just let everything be? I would assume that we would maintain it on our 2007 AMCAS, but I can't seem to find it. I can only log in to the 2008.

Here is a link to 2007 AMCAS. Good luck!

this may be a random question for some of you, but does anyone remember when usa and uasom sent out their secondaries?

someone i know currently at uasom said he vaguely remembered getting that secondary at the beginning of august. i'd like to figure out when, as i'm trying to plan a mini-vacation, and want to make sure that i'm here to fill out the secondary and turn it in within the 3 week window or so.

thanks!

I think it all depends on when your AMCAS is verified, because I found out late September, and I know some people who did in October.

Kdel and 1/2asser: Have ya'll heard anything from the waitlist yet?

yeah, they emailed me an acceptance on monday but i didn't check it until wed. (why didn't they call??) unfortunately i just signed a lease up at wake forest so i'm really torn between where i want to go now. i imagine its hard to get un biased opinions right now but all input is welcome! thanks

Congrats!I think that you should go to the school of your choice. Let me know what you decide though, 'cause I might be the next one on the list. Good luck! :luck:

ok scratch that, i just got in(probably 1/2asser's spot if he gave it up) and now im confused as well on what to do -uab or usa

Hmmm... I gotta be coming up on the list somewhere. Well, let me know what you decide 'cause I'm keepin my fingers crossed and slowly going insane. 🙂

wasn't me, i finally decided on uab. toughest decision i've ever made which i guess means i've had it pretty easy

Hey guys,

I'll be one of the 'tour people' at UAB orientation next week. While I'm sure they're going to have us show you specific things, if there's anything you guys are particularly interested in seeing that might not be in the standard type tour then let me know and I'll try to arrange it. I really can't think of any examples of this, but I wanted to make the offer anyway 🙂 Also, feel free to ask any questions you have about the upcoming school year, either at orientation, on this thread, or by PM. I'll do my best to get you the real skinny 🙂

Finally, make sure you check out the Equal Access Clinic booth at the student orgs. fair. We're a new free clinic based out of Avondale that treats the homeless/indigent/uninsured populations of that area. We've been open for about 6 months after a number of years working through administrative junk, so we're really excited and have lots of big growth opportunities on the horizon. If you're interested in becoming involved, you can get lots more information at the fair. Also, I know you may not know much about your curriculum yet, but your first 3 weeks (I think) is a class called patients, doctors, and society. It's the feely good stuff, ethics, history, etc. There's a community service project at the end of that, Aug. 10 I believe. I don't know if it's mandatory, or graded, or anything like that, but the EAC will have a project for you guys if you want to take it. The plan is to do health screenings at one of the local homeless shelters (still to be arranged..). You'd meet with some 2nd years briefly, learn to take BPs, temps, resps, pulse, blood sugars, whatever else we think of to do, and then we'll haul you out there and get to work. It's an opportunity to learn to actually do some things a little bit earlier than the rest of the class, and get into the fun stuff. Of course, payment for this is that we'll also ask you to hang some fliers for us, but that's no big deal. If anyone's interested in that, we'll have a sign up for it at the orientation fair. I encourage you all to get involved with the clinic, it's a great service to the community, it's a great LOOKING community service activity, and you'll learn your ICM skills much faster than you would just from class activities, and be that much closer to rocking your OSCEs. Anyway, didn't mean to turn this into an advertisement, but I wanted to let you guys know about the opportunity. If you have any UAB related questions at all, ask away!

Does anyone know what times our classes are everyday?

I believe they're from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, but i could be wrong. 10:00 seems kinda late, but i'm pretty sure that the CMB students have CMB from 8:00 to 10:00.

yeah, i was curious about daily class times with this new curric. but i can't find one on the site. 10am would be awesome:banana:

i decided on uab. i hope you get in auburnpremed!

For those who applied to UAB and USA last year, do both schools accept LOR's from interfolio?
Thanks

Yes. 10AM to 3PM, with the exception of small groups that can be held earlier.

8AM to 10AM is set aside for the MD/PhD students who are double loading with CMB.

I got a question for everyone who's attended orientation: Did all 176 people show up? In other words, I'm just wondering if any miracles could happen b/w now and Monday.

one person didnt show up yesterday so they called the next guy on the waitlist, who was in the middle of filling out his 2008 amcas. he drove up from mobile today and joined but orientation has been a bit overwhelming so who knows? maybe someone will drop out...

Overwhelmingly boring?

How are you guys liking school so far?

How long is it taking others for their status to show "complete"? I submitted my secondary 8/5 and all of my letters on 8/13. Two of them were sent via Interfolio and one through my University's Pre-med committee. It shows they have received my secondary, but nothing about letters.

Also, I have yet to receive South Alabama's secondary but I have been AMCAS verified since 8/3 and I am in-state. Has anyone else faced similar delays?

Thanks guys!
