Hey Q, I have a question. You have an incredible MCAT score, and I would assume that you would be competitive at a lot of great schools. However, it seems like you have your heart set on UAB. Is there any particular reason? Sorry for being nosey, but I'm just curious about your situation. If you'd rather not say, I totally understand
Mainly it's that I'm an alum, and I enjoyed my time there.

Don't forget the nice people, the high-tech facilities (if you don't count the anatomy labs...which are being changed anyway), the huge, sexy new hospital, or the swanky new med-student clubhouse/commons area/study rooms (maybe my favorite part of the tour). GO BLAZERS!

Well, I haven't seen any of the new facilities yet, but hopefully I'll get a chance to in the future. 😉 However, I can definitely agree that the people are super nice. 👍

For those interviewing tomorrow, good luck! :luck: :luck: :luck:

I'm really glad that it won't be 85 degrees out for all of you, yay.

Can I ask any girls on here what type of shoes you plan to wear? I can't decide on my comfortable but not all that cute shoes vs. moderate heels that will really not be comfortable during a tour. The only reason I'm asking is that it seems like Southern girls dress up so much more than I'm used to and I'm worried about being the only girl not in stilletos.

Or for those who already interviewed, what were the girls wearing?

Thanks!

P.S. If anyone is coming to B'Ham needing a place to stay I would like to offer up my fiance and I's place. It's not very big but we have a very comfortable couch, we're only about 3 minutes from UAB and we get up early anyway. 🙂

There was only one female in my interview group, so my sample size is a little small...she dressed up & wore cute shoes. The look you are going for is clean & professional. Since we are in the south that might look a little dressier & more cutsy than if you were from Boulder, CO. Cute is good, as long as you don't look like a hooker or one of those southern girls who looks ready to bat her eyes and rub her boobs on anyone who acts interested. I have a female friend in dental school who looks like a southern bombshell & she has caught a lot of flak from her classmates & the female profs over her good looks. Of course she does rub her boobs on people if it brings her an advantage...so the bitterness is well founded.
Everyone at the UAB interview looked like they were dressed up for church with rich presbyterians. I don't think that heels would be necessary, if the shoe was still dressy enough to be appropriate for a suit. A low heel would also be appropriate, if you don't like high heels (in my view a 1" heel is a lot more professional than a 2&1/2 or 3" heel, unless you are very short, and the shoe looks conservative.) If you aren't pleased with your shoe selection at home, Zoe's in Forest park is a good place to look for attractive, used clothes & shoes.

Hmmm....this is tough. As a guy, I honestly do not remember looking at any girls' shoes during our interview day. However, I want to say that a girl that I knew had on some half heels.....i don't even know if that is a type of shoe. I guess I'm not much help. Sorry, but best of luck to you.

Thanks for the advice! I'll stay away from rubbing my breasts on any of the interviewers/deans/med students for now.

Really though, thanks. You've confirmed my suspicions that Southern girls are going to be a bit more dressy than other places. What about this, I have a light grey suit with very subtle pink stiching going through it. Should I stick with a white collar shirt, or would a light pink one be okay? The suit looks great with pink, but so many people have talked about wearing all black/grey/etc. to these things. What do you guys think?

I wore a colored shirt with my suit, but my color choice was zehr konservativ: just shy of medium blue-grey. I am of the persuasion that if you can pull it off, slight departures from the conservative norm are o.k., if the outfit is still attractive. Most of the applicants had white shirts with dark suits. I think there were just 2-3 of us without white shirts. And everyone who interviewed that day got in, so it isn't like you get blackballed for wearing a little color. I can't remember the color of the woman's suit. It wasn't black or dark grey, however....I don't think. Women usually have more freedom in this area than men do anyway, so your pink is probably o.k., as long as you feel comfortable wearing it and it isn't a magenta or fuscia or pepto pink. 🙂

I'm going with comfort over fashion with my shoes. They have about a 1" heel, but I've had them for years so they are broken-in and comfortable. I think the pink shirt should be fine, especially since the suit has some pink on it.

I think it's really interesting that there was only one female ED at the interview. I wish I could have been there!

I heard that two people from that day didn't get in, but were put into the regular applicant pool.

So did anybody interview today? 🙂

Nope. I still haven't heard. When are you interviewing, BooMed? Next week? Good luck!

Boomed,

yeah, I wore a deep blue shirt, I'm pretty sure nobody cares. Just look professional and put together (you know, act like you care..... lol) and I don't think it matters.

Good luck!

Next Thursday! I'm so happy and excited that I'm not even nervous yet.

Q, how's it going with your other choices? It seems like a lot of schools are a little faster than UAB and are already handing out some acceptances and such.
I'm so proud that you want to go to UAB when you will probably get in... everywhere!

I am an OOS applicant to UAB. I was previously a resident of AL for 23 years and an alumni of UAB. I have not received a secondary but I did take the August MCAT. Does anyone know if UAB has started sending out rejections? Thanks.

OOS=Out of State?

I don't think they've sent any rejections yet, you might want to write them an email inquiring about your situation.

Good luck, I gather that it's much more difficult to be accepted as an out-of-stater.

I'm also OOS, and I haven't heard of anyone being rejected yet either. And yes, it is much more difficult to get accepted as an out-of-stater. That's true of practically all state schools.

Q, will you tell me when somebody else solves your new orgo riddle and link to the thread that it's in? Because I have no chance of ever figuring it out and it's going to drive me nuts!

Nikki2002 already figured it out. I could look for the post, but it would be easier if I just told you. Do you want me to tell you?

Where do you find these....or are you really just a true Goddess and can come up with all these yourself?
Both. Some I've seen before, some I make up. 😀

But now you have a new one!!! 😱

Umm, I was trying to explain your avatars to my fiance and he was kind of like, okaaayyyy...

Whatever, his law school friends and him make totally unfunny law jokes all the time. 😛

Your chem puzzles are awesome. You should have your own MCAT section.

lmao, the MCAT is already hard enough as it is. 😱

Law jokes, unlike chem jokes, are never funny. 👎 Well, unless they're made at the lawyer's expense. :meanie:

Nope, but you're on the right track with the first part of your statement.

Well, if he can laugh at himself, then maybe he's all right, even if he is a lawyer. 😉 😛

It gets better--he either wants to practice as a defense lawyer in malpractice suits, which would be awesome, or he wants to study international law. In which case he and I will be taking our degrees and becoming expatriots. Yay!

As long as he DEFENDS docs, and doesn't PROSECUTE them. 😛

Any OOS invites, just curious

Oops, should have made that clearer. Defense lawyer as in defense of doctors. 😛 Both of his parents are physicians so he's a little biased like us.

Ha ha, his dad works with doctors who are alcoholics/drug addicts and WOW, sometimes even docs really deserve to be sued. 😱

I GOT IN!!!!

Got the call from South Alabama earlier this morning. For those that interviewed earlier in the season, I'd recommend to call Vanessa in the admissions office to check your status. They said that letters weren't gonna go out for a bit, but they had already decided who they were accepting. Good luck everyone!!

Congrats!

Yay Jammin!!!!!

Did UAB give you any kind of indication of when you might hear back?

Not specifically. All i know are the rumors that the committee meets on the 15th and then sends acceptances first week of each month until mid-March/April. Right now, I'm just happy to stop looking into the Special Masters Program at Georgetown (back up if I didn't get in anywhere)

Congrats Jammin!
Did South call you or did you call them and ask? I would be way too nervous too call them, especially since I have my interview at UAB thursday. If I didn't get into South, that would put a lot of pressure on my UAB interview.

Hehe, I was in the same boat last week. I had UAB last thursday, so I waited till Friday to call. They said that basically, "we have the scores all calculated, but we need to talk to Mark to figure out where the cutoff is, so we'll call you back monday" That being said, they called yesterday at 12:55pm.

Good luck with UAB!

Btw, are you in ugrad now or post-grad? I saw that you had a pretty short drive to the USA interview (hehe, well, much shorter than mine 🙂 )

I graduated in May from Auburn, so now I'm living at home in Mobile and working full-time. It was nice to only have to take one day off from work for the interview but now I have to drive five hours tomorrow to B'ham.

I just recently registered to sdn but have been combing through each post after learning about the site a couple of weeks ago. I have an interview coming soon and was wondering around what general time did everyone's interview end b/c i need to know if it is feasible to catch a 4 pm flight after the interview or should i book a later flight. thanks alot.

I think that the schedule said the day ends at 2:30, so if it doesn't go over you should be fine. Shouldn't take more than 30 min. to get to the airport, right?

We were actually finished around 1:30. The last little bit of the day is just the tour of the facilities. Our tourguides weren't all that enthusiastic about showing us around, so we walked around, saw parts of the new hospital and then pretty much left. I think my tour guide actually had an exam the next day, so it was understandable that he had better things to do. The general schedule for the day is that :

7:45 - Arrive (make sure you note the time change, it's incorrect on the interview invitation, i think it says 8)

7:45-9 - Talk w. Dr. Smith, watch a video, yada yada

9-11 - Interviews, 25 min long, minimum 3, maximum 5. They have "special interest" interviews where basically you talk with someone about a specific program that UAB thinks you might be interested in. I had a "special interest" interview with a clinical investigator, because I mentioned that i would be interested in doing research during/after med school. These interviews are conducted by people who aren't on the admissions committee, so it's more than less a time ot chill and talk

11:30-12:30 - Lunch & chat w/ med student. They should be able to answer specific questions. Lunch was good. We had sweet tea, so I was happy.

12:30 - end - Tour of facilities. Some will be long, some will be short. Kinda depends on tour guide. If you have a flight to catch, then I'm sure that it wouldn't be a problem if you left a little early.

Good luck!

Thanks!

Now that's the day before I'm feeling nervous. 😱

Ahh, my neighbor just scared me talking about abortion questions. 😱 Do they ask you about abortion? 😱 Why would they ask you about abortion? 😱

Geesh, I really doubt he's even right. Whatever.

Boo, time to get off SDN and go to bed. You're going to be fine tomorrow. :luck: And most likely no one is going to ask you about abortion.

That's the spirit! Go in relaxed and you'll be great. But, hopefully you're getting ready to sleep and not sitting on SDN at this hour.
