I did it!

But now I feel more anxious. :scared: Why is that?

All I can think about are the couple of things that I said that weren't perfect, even though overall things went great. Sigh.

I like meeting the med students. The third years work 12 hrs/day, 6-7 days/week. Wow. 😱

After my interview at UAB, I really want to go there. It wouldn't even matter what campus they wanted to send me to, as long as they gave me an acceptance. My tour guide was so excited about the school that our tour went until 3. I think we walked through three or four different hospitals but they all seem to run together. Sorry, I'm really excited now because I had such a great day! 😀

That's great Ybil! I'm excited too!

Did we meet at all? I was the ONLY person not wearing a black suit, except for one guy in dark grey.

Did anyone on SDN get an acceptance today? It seemed like they were gonna send them out really soon... although probably not from our group, unfortunately.

I first wanted to say good luck to all those who interviewed in the last few weeks.

I have a question for you though. Has anyone heard that UAB will be opening an Osteopathic Med School as well??? There was an article that someone told me about in a local Birmingham paper. I was just curious if anything had been said during the interviews or tours.

Hmm, I remember reading something about another college in town opening a DO school awhile back. It wasn't UAB though, it was one of the traditionally black colleges in town and the article talked about whether or not the DO school would primarily have just black students or not. Does that ring a bell rebel?

Didn't hear anything from UAB in the past week.

I wish my tour guides were a little more enthusiastic about the school. It kind of left a lot to be desired for the school. But, seeing everyone else's postive response reminds me why it really is my first choice.

What were your tourguides like?

I met a second-year the other day who told me that he had enough time to work out at the gym every day. And that he only ever slept 4 hours/night! 😱 He looked surprisingly fresh.

They were a three third years: 2 guys and one girl. After we left the lunch, they kept asking us what we wanted to see, so we said the hospital. They didn't seem enthusiastic about showing us around though. One tour guide kept bragging about how he took his previous tour to the athletic center. We basically went through a couple of hallways while they talked....crossed one of the overpasses into the new building, but the lobby was as far as we got. I really didn't know what to ask about, because I'm not very familiar with the facilities (hence why i was hoping for a better tour).

Wow, that's really lame, I'm sorry! They probably are just poor hosts in general and didn't know any better. One of mine actually had to go back to work at the hospital, so they dropped her off there. I had to go to class so I didn't go on the tour.

That would have been Miles College. I had heard that as well. Then right after that is when UAB had the announcement. I just cant find it anywhere in print. Think I will ask one of the residents tomorrow at work, today was kind of wild, but maybe one can tell me or find out. I'll post it when I hear something for sure.

Sounds like the tour I got. The guides were nice; we just didn't see anything but hallways. I volunteer at the hospital, so I know how nice UAB really is, but I would *never* have known it just by the tour we got.

Wow, that's strange. Too bad they hand out the feedback form before the tour, so you couldn't have written that it was lame.

Did anyone have any out-of-state applicants at their interview? I think I had one guy from Texas, but then he mentioned that he hoped to "switch" his residency to in-state before school started. Umm... 😕 Why didn't he just apply in-state?

Yea, i had a guy from Georgia in my interview pool. Nothing special about him, just a regular geogia resident.

hey guys,

sorry for snooping around on your thread, but i'm just noticing how many of you thought the tours were 'lame'. as someone who gives these tours decently frequently, i know i've had really great tours and some that were, in fact, pretty lame. i would like to hear any suggestions for improvement. i can certainly understand why just walking through the major hallways would be boring, but taking several groups of applicants through any of the clinics, wards, units, surgery suites, or even the emergency room is pretty much out of the question. i know that sucks, but is there anything else - apart from the new fitness center - that you would be interested in seeing? i normally ask my group how much they'd like to see, because many times the group appears pretty disinterested, which is probably reasonable after a long morning of interviewing, and i don't want to subject them to an even longer day of having to be 'on'. i will say that the single most important factor in making/breaking a tour is the applicants. if y'all have questions, and lots of them, it connotes interest and gives license for the guide to offer up more information. otherwise, we feel like we're cramming stuff down your throats that you're not interested in hearing. seriously though, i would like to hear your suggestions. thanks, and good luck to everyone.

The part of the tour that toured the school facilities (i.e. Volker Hall) was nice. We got to meet a number of current students, and see many of the places we will be spending our time next year. The tour guides/ MS3 students were great: friendly & helpful, and genuinely interested in both what they were doing & with helping the applicants.
That said, the hospital tour is terrible. All you see is the hallways. Anyone can walk in off the street and see that on their own. UAB has several features that make it a fantastic choice for an applicant, including the excellent (and pervasive) use of technology, the beautiful new hospital, the strong research opportunities available to students, etc... None of these were really addressed in my tour. I only know of them because I am a volunteer at the hospital, and an alumnus of the undergraduate school.

We were told repeatedly how UAB is now one of the most technologically advanced hospitals in the country, but no one told us what that meant or showed us what that looks like (in terms of patient care). We (interviewees) are left with nothing more than the word of the admissions people about these features. I fear that we are missing out on the opportunity to get some of the stronger applicants to fall in love with UAB while they are visiting here.

I understand that it is difficult or impossible for you (as an MS3/4) to take groups of students into the ER, or into clinics, etc. However, this really means that the administration needs to figure out ways to get the applicants the ability to see our students & attendings at work. When I interviewed for graduate schools, I got taken to dinner, and was given meetings with faculty & tours with faculty as well as students. Perhaps the school should have some faculty set aside time to spend with the applicants in the clinics, etc? I know that this takes both money and time, but if the school wants to increase its share of the top applicants, it might be worth considering.

As an applicant, my objectives were to see the classroom/study resouces I would be using, meet current students (at both the MS1/MS2 stage & at the MS3/MS4 stage), and I wanted to see where I would be learning to treat patients.

One of the best things I did as an undergrad was shadow a group of med students as they went through part of their day at the hospital. I got to meet the MS3 & MS4 students in our group, the intern, the residents, the chief resident, and the attending. And I got to see them presenting patients, solve problems, use the remarkable hospital facilities. etc., and even got to meet patients & see the team treating patients. It might be nice to offer such an experience as an option to interested applicants. After I went through that experience, I knew that I wanted to go to UAB even more.

Sorry for the long post, but I am SO glad you asked this question, because
1) I am an intense supporter of UAB, of both its undergrad school & the medical college.
2) I feel that the tour was the only thing about my interview experience that could have been improved.
3) I would love to get involved in assisting applicants once I matriculate in July.
4) UAB is a fantastic place, and could do much better than we are currently w.r.t. the tours. (Bear in mind that I know that this is not the fault of the student tour guides. In fact, your asking this question on SDN is evidence of the dedication of the MS3/MS4 students to helping their school by want to conduct even better interviews & tours.

Cheers,

Odrade1

ps. thanks for giving your time to the applicants, BTW.

BooMed,
I had on a black skirt suit w/ blue shell, short blonde/brown hair.

On the subject of the tour guide, mine actually did take us through the ER. It was pretty dead at the time, but the facilities looked awesome. He also showed us the new MRI machine that they have, and the great images that it can produce. I wish that I could actually have seen more of Volker Hall. I didn't see the first or second year classrooms or really much beyond the fourth/fifth floor common areas.

Good luck to everyone :luck: ! By the way I got something from USA saying that I had been placed on hold. Does this mean that I will keep on being reviewed when they meet, or they won't come back to me until near the end? 😕

Sorry to hear about the hold. 🙁 Based on what i know about the process, what happens is that they tabulate a particular score for each individual out of 10, and then have an initial cutoff. So, hypothetically speaking, you could have scored a 7.4, and the cutoff for early november was 7.5. As the application season progresses, the cutoff is lowered and then all applicants higher than that new cutoff are notified.

I suppose a shortened version of my response woudl be, no, your app won't be reviewed, but yes, you could be accepted at any point.

Hmm, I think I like the UAB method better, where they don't hold you or accept you if you don't make the cutoff, until the very end. The word "hold" would scare me.

I'm surprised that no SDNers were accepted this week. I thought for sure that all you smarties would be in yesterday! 😛

Has UAB given out any acceptances to regular applicants yet?

They told us on Thursday that they were meeting that night and they would be sending out acceptance emails friday or monday.

Hmm... did she interview? I'm assuming out-of-state. It's pretty tough to get in OOS.

I got the impression last Thursday that our applications wouldn't be considered that day, that we would be evaluated next month. Ahh, waiting. 🙁 😳

She *is* OOS, from NC. I think she was rejected pre-interview, not post. Not sure if she got a secondary.

That makes more sense. A lot of my friends in Georgia were planning on applying to UAB because it's "easy" to get in, but I'm not sure that's true. Of course, I'm pulling for our Q here... 🙂

Thanks. 🙂 It's VERY hard to get into UAB from OOS. The only reason I'm even trying it is b/c I'm a former AL resident and I have strong ties to AL.

P.S. Q--I liked your thread in allo about emergency room stuff. I feel the same way, I can handle working in the ER for a month or so, but I'm not "fascinated and excited" by gross stuff like so many seem to be.

I'm much more enthusiastic about helping my patients with preventative health care--that's saving lives too. 😛

I just can't help but wonder how many of these people have actually ever SEEN trauma and still want to see more. I suspect many of them probably haven't seen any, and that's why they think it's so "cool." 😛

Hey, can you post the link to the other thread. I work as an EMT, so i always love a good ER chat.

Very true. And you don't have don't have to love that stuff to be a good doc, it takes all types. I just hate it when (pre) med kids act like you have to be this cold, perfect, inshakable human being to be successful in medicine.

It's my personal goal to avoid every competetive/mean person in med school!

just curious if anyone has gotten an out of state interview yet

i'm pretty close by (louisiana) and know a guy from here who is a first year now

just wondering if i should keep my hopes up

I did last week. I'm from FL. But I think they're just starting to invite OOS applicants. Good luck to you. 🙂

I could eat an entire thanksgiving meal of cranberry sauce, with maybe a little dressing mixed in for flavor.... 🙂 The jellied kind, of course, I can't eat the kind with berry chunks in it!

Ha ha, that's great, me too, I put cranberry sauce on every single other food.

I don't know if this has been answered here yet or not...

Fellow OOS UAB applicants:
How long did you have to wait after being complete to hear something?

still waiting, then again my only connection to the state is vacationing on the beach there

I have nothing useful to add about med schools, but Q, did you see your new friend KofQuimica? I thought it was cute, but the mods shut it down.
