I am in-state and interviewed on March 9th. Haven't heard yet, but I know there are folks here who have waited much longer than I have.

I did just check the status page and was surprised to see that in the post-acceptance category the line for my deposit (which I have not sent due to not yet having been accepted) reads "waived." Probably not significant, but definitely weird.

Good luck, y'all.

Hey, you get to be in state! Congrats Ferreed. 🙂

Good luck ya'll, I hope that all of our SDN buddies get in soon. :luck:

I had the same thing happen on my status page. All fees have been changed to "waived" even the fee I paid with my secondary app that previously had a date. Has this happened to anyone else?

Same here.

It does seem like only our of state people who interviewed a while back are getting in now. I interviewed on Feb 16th. A couple of things changed on my status page. Too bad that doesn't mean anything. Good luck. Think they would be terribly annoyed if we called them?

PapaDosh's post on 3-17 said he called and basically got no where...so I'm afraid the waits still on, but right now that's better than the alternative. Good Luck to ALL!!

Thanks, Boo. 🙂

It was a long wait, but in the end I was very impressed by the level of concern that the admissions folks expressed. They fixed my state residency issue and shoe-horned me into that last interview session (well, they said it might be the last...) I had to scramble to get my secondary and LORs in to them in one week, and the period from "Hey, you're really in-state!" to "Hey, wanna interview?" was only a couple of weeks. I'm not complaining, though. I'm really just blown away by the admissions folks getting all this turned around so quickly. I mean, they could have just as easily said, "Tough luck, kid. Try again next year." Right now I'm just happy to be here. 😳

It really makes me feel good about the school that they went the extra mile for you. 🙂 Plus I really want you to get in!

By the way, the financial aid packet is up for 2006-2007... and I can't download it.

Maybe UAB/UASOM should hire some more computer people. 😀

Okay, the status page is back to normal for me...no more "Waived" fees!!! Who knows what wrong button someone pushed!! Have others that posted strange "waive" fees have yours been corrected?

Yep, I'm back to normal now, too. Someone was just warming up their typing fingers in preparation for sending out a massive load of acceptance emails. Yeah, that's it... 😉

I have a question for current UASOM students - how necessary is a computer in med school? Do I need to buy a laptop to bring to school or is a desktop at home o.k.?

I kind of want an excuse to buy a laptop but I also don't want to spend the money. 😛

Any advice would be appreciated.

There are plenty of fast desktops in Volker in the old labs, but the new building has only a limited number of desktops (something like 10). I've seen a lot of laptops used in the study areas. Again, this totally depends on whether you study at school or at home - I tend to be less distracted at school, so I purchased a laptop.

What is the best way to go about withdrawing an acceptance from USA after I have sent in the deposit? Call or letter or what? Thanks in advance.

I would e-mail the Office of Admissions something like...

Dear USA Office of Admissions,

I have been accepted to my first choice medical school, so I am declining my acceptance to USA.

Will you please return my acceptance deposit at your earliest convenience.

Thank you for all your assistance and consideration.

Sincerely,
Me

hey..
uab has started sending out emails..a frnd of mine got an email today saying she was top third on the wait list but i havent received anything..
has anyone heard?

I received the following e-mail from USA today.

You are currently on an alternate list for a possible interview. All of the interview positions are filled but we may have cancellations, if we do then we will move down a small list of students to fill those spots. Our last interview day is April 5th.

Help!!! 😱 If anyone has an interview scheduled with USA and you plan to cancel it, PLEASE e-mail your cancellation to USA NOW!!! USA's Office of Admissions e-mail address is [email protected].

Also, if anyone is willing to sell their USA interview spot please let me know the asking price!!!

Well this was an interesting week. Tuesday I got an acceptance from USA so at least I know I will be going to med school next year, and since I live in Mobile right now, everyone is really pro-USA. Then today I got an email from UAB saying I was in the top third of the waitlist. I really hope to go to UAB, but I guess I'll just have to keep waiting. I'm going to go ahead and file my FAFSA and I was wondering if I should go ahead and list UAB as one of my schools even though I haven't been accepted. What do y'all think? Would it speed the process up getting financial aid if I've already listed them once I'm accepted?

Does anyone know if UAB's class is filled?
yes..the class is filled..my frnd got an email saying that she ws on the top third of the waitlist and that the class was filled.

At my interview on March 9th they told us that they had sent out about 190 acceptances for a 160-student class, but that they usually sent out 230 acceptances before all was said and done. Of course, they didn't tell us how many of those came from folks accepted off of the waitlist...

Hang in there! 👍

Has anyone told you your the greatest because of your positive attitude!!! You'll definitely go on to some greatness because of it!!! Thanks for continuing to give the waiters HOPE!!! 🙂

Yes, include anywhere you MIGHT get in. I know at Emory they said that they can give you your financial aid if accepted off of the waitlist within a week if you had already filed, closer to a month later if you wait until accepted to add them to the list. So go ahead and put them on.

I tell you what, my laptop was the greatest purchase I ever made. Yes there are plenty of computers in Volker to study at, but I like the option of being mobile. I study everywhere. I highly suggest buying a good sturdy laptop!

PS. One more block of classes!!! Bring it on Nueroscience, Behavioral and Nutrition!!!!

Did the med school have Spring break this past week? I was wondering... I'd like to take a trip next year during spring break but I'm wondering if there are crazy tests right after the break or anything that would make this a poor idea. Do you think I'll be able to go on vacation during this time next year? 🙄

Yeah I was down in Clearwater during SB. It was good to in between classes during SB. Nothing to study at all. Good times....good times.

When are you moving to Birmingham and where are you moving from?

I'm from Oregon but my fiance and I moved to the South about two years ago. We lived in Atlanta first and we've been in B'ham for about six months. 🙂

I can't get on the discussion board. 🙁

No combination of my names works. My last name is hyphenated so that usually screws things up.

Have you tried emailing the board administrator? At least there'll always be SDN!

And speaking of pizza, we all need to have a SDN@UAB party of some sort in the next couple of months. That way, we can all have a built in clique to gravitate to, thus avoiding the awkward 'meeting people' process at orientation! YAY! I mean, who wants to meet people anyway.....

:-D

I'll hopefully be lucky enough to be you guys lower classmate (2012) and just reading this thread is about the only thing that makes me look forward to the idea of living in Alabama another 4 years.

I just got back from a second look, and the SDN people zeroed in on each other like a beacon. So don't worry. You'll get there, and BAM, instant SDN click. 😀 (Are there really people left in the world who DON'T read SDN???)

od, are you the one who posted on the discussion board about housing? I only ask because I'm the one trying to avoid alabaster 🙂
Yeah, I put a post up there about housing. It's the one comparing Crestwood, Forest Park, and that neighborhood whose name I can't remember.

One thing I didn't mention in that post was that I had a friend who lived about 30-45 minutes away from campus her first 4 years of med school. Since she never went to class, she just picked an apartment complex & neighborhood that she liked, and didn't worry about trying to get closer to campus. Driving 45 minutes for clinical rotations was irritating, so she bought a house in South Avondale at the end of her 4th year, before she started her residency here.

Personally, I reccomend buying a house, loft, or condo. Birmingham's economy is strong & property values have risen in most areas of town for as long as anyone can remember. By the time one finishes school, you can have made some decent money. For us, the kicker was that we were paying 900 a month in rent, and we realized that we could be applying that money to a house payment, build equity, and simultaneoulsy ride the upward swing of the housing market.

Someone mentioned on the uab bulletin board about a neighborhood where you could get a good house for 137K. I know the area that person is speaking of, and the house I was in in that neighborhood was very nice. You definitely get the most bang for your buck if you go out of town 25-45 minutes. However, many of those areas will be in development for another 7-10 years, and I was worried that someone would rather buy a new house in those neighborhoods, rather than (my) slightly used home in the same area. Between that fear and the longer drive, I stuck with living in-town.

Q,
havent seen you around here in a while.. Have you decided yet where you will be going next year? Do we need to save a spot for you in our burgeoning SDN@UAB clique?

I don't think Q has made a final decision yet... but she has left Alabama in the dust.

Commence muttering.

 Listen, dudes, this is MY thread, and since I've donated money to this venerable website, I can apparently close it if I want. :meanie:

In all seriousness, no, I haven't decided where to go yet. I just started attending second looks, and I'm waiting to hear back from one more school. But regardless, I definitely do not think that I'm too good for UAB; I'm an alum. 🙂

Does UAB have a second look?

has anybody been placed on the waitlist?

Oh it's a lot of fun. I love new people and I have a ton of new friends!! Not to mention I branched out and am friends with the dental and optometry kids(my GF is an optometry gal).

I didn't know you were already in Birmingham. I live downtown across the street from UAB hospital. Are you downtown too?

Yeah, I'm downtown on the northside. Second Avenue North, to be exact.

So I don't need to be afraid of all ya'll crazy Southeners? 😉
