I just took my DAT today 6/24/05, and here are my scores:

PAT: 22
QR: 21
RC: 16 😱
Bio: 22
GC: 21
OC: 21
TS: 21
AA: 20

Aside from the other scores, I'm very dissapointed with my RC score. Anyone could give me feedback if I should retake it?
THanks a bunch!

GPA: 3.5
Science: 3.6
AADSAS GPA: 3.6
Applying to: UOP, USC, BU, UPittsburgh, UCLA, UPenn, UCSF

your scores are great in all the other sections. I would suggest calling the schools you applied to and ask them in the 16 will take you out of consideration. If they say yes then retake it, if not then don't, but i'd be prepared to answer questions in an interview about it. You are clearly an intelligent person, otherwise your scores would not have been so high! Also your PAT is truly impressive...CONGRATS

Ditto. 16 is a tumor, but is it malignant? The only way to find out is to contact the schools. Doing so may require a bit of guts, but do it anyway. They get these questions all the time, and they won't remember who you are, so go ahead and pester them. Or you can start nicely but knowing their names. For example, if you are calling UCLA, the contact person is Sarah Johnson. So you say something like... "Hi Sarah. I'm calling about......." She's nice, and will respond nicely. I don't know about others. Most of the admission secretaries/staff are nice because the school knows that they are the first representative of the school to the incoming students. The school actually wants to be nice to students, not because they are desperate for students, but they are desperate for excellent students.

Try that and tell us how it goes.

Wow, we almost applied to exactly the same schools, except I didn't apply to BU, but I also applied to Columbia, NYU, and Case. I don't think you want to go to USC. I applied there because it was state school, but then everything I've heard about them has been negative.

USC is a State School? They accept quite a bit of outa Staters though!?

Nice analogy with the tumor/16/malignant

I was ambiguous. What I meant to say is that it is a school in the state of California. It is private school, and not funded by the California taxpayers. When I saw the school you are applying to, I automatically assumed you are a resident of Cali, and want to stay here, so I used State.

Thanks! That'll be the first thing I do on Monday 😀

I think the USC's Problem-Based Learning still works. It motivates you to work harder and find the answers yourself. They'll correct you if your solutions are wrong. Also, you retain the answers better when you look for them yourself, right? 🙂 The only thing I don't like from USC is that the students get less clinical work :scared: But I think I can find other ways to sharpen my handwork 😀

so wait....how was the test??? hard??? let us know what you thought of it
thx

The science was definitely very detailed. I had one question on sea urchins "what's the purpose of extra cellular membrane in sea urchins?" GChem and ochem were pretty simple and straightforward. PAT was harder than topscore, I think.., esp. on the top/front/side views, I had more complex objects (but thank God, I still did well :luck: ). there were 1/2 questions on probability and some word problems. RC, hmm, 3 science readings. i think it was harder than topscore. I got 21 on topscore, but 16 on the real one 😡

What was hard about the reading passages? Were they much longer? Were the questions more difficult to answer?

It wasn't that they were longer, but the type of questions were different from the topscore questions. In topscore, you can still answer the questions even though you don't fully comprehend the reading, but in the real DAT, it wasn't like that at all, and I got caught up with the time...

I would suggest you to apply for schools. My friend from my college got 17 across every section of the DAT which including the RC. She got accepted to UMDNJ. His GPA was 3.85. Your score, comparing to his , is much better. Go ahead, apply for D. schools. Trust me, D. school is not to hard to get it if you can do good on the interview.

What books and tools did you use, and also how long did you study? those are some great scores in my opinion though.

Ok, so I called BU, the lady said BU wanted 19 at least on RC, "so you should retake it." UCLA and UOP haven't replied my e-mail yet. I haven't called UPenn yet. For UCSF, one low score won't kill me, as long as I do well on that subject academically. UPittsburgh, ..haven't called them either.

If you have the same stats as mine, hope this will help 🙂 and thanks for other sdn-ers for your help!

Hmm, a week before the day, I was so anxious that I could literally sit down and study right after I woke up every morning 😳. Every day, I studied about 2-4 hours, then relaxed/ate snacks/watched TV for about 1-2 hours, then went back to studying. 2 days before, I suggest you to go out and relax yourself, otherwise, you'd get deadly nervous. I went out with my friends and did some shopping. The night before, do something that'll make you tired and fall asleep right away. I couldn't sleep until 11.30pm, then woke up at 5am (thinking about the DAT), then again at 6am (again...the DAT). It was bad, but I could still concentrate on the test. My friend took the "sleeping pill," but I suggest you not take this pill, but just do some activity or sport that'll make you exhausted.

Regarding books that I used, I used blue Kaplan and Schaum's Bio for science. DOn't go to your textbooks, they'll just waste your time. For math, I used barron's, blue kaplan, and my old notes. For PAT, I did practice problems, then figured out my mistakes and learned from them. One thing, for top/side/front views, if you can relate the 2 given views and visualize how the 3D objects look like, this section will be a breeze. Angle ranking, don't spend too long on this, just look at the angles once and decide. THe longer you look at it, the more likely you'll get it wrong. For RC, hmm, I guess you should ask someone else.. 😛

I'll be glad to help if you have more questions 😀

1st off, congrats on your scores. your stats are excellent and i am sure you will do just fine.

on the topic of PBL, yeah it motivates you a lot till you start doing it. it sounded all incredibly great and all till i had to go through it at IU. after doing it for a year, i can hardly wait to get done with it in the next coming year. the only thing i am glad about is that at least at IU we still get plenty of clinical experience. i would have hated to go through this at USC.

bottom line, PBL stands on people's way of getting more clinical experience. 👎 👎
