How many of you took community college prerequisites for dental school and got in?
Just wondering, because i have taken all my prerequisites at a CC and ended up with a 3.4 gpa. Now transferring to University of Minnesota and taking some upper division science classes. am i at a big disadvantage from finishing all my prereqs at CC?

No, you're not. Keep improving your GPA and have the DAT nailed, and you'll be dental school bound then.😍

some schools don't accept community college credits. but some do if you transfered the classes to a 4 year university and they gave you credit. safe bet is to check with which ever dental school that says specificially that they do not accept cc credits. good luck!

I took all of my pre-reqs at my CC before I transferred to my university and I got in just fine. As long as you do well in your upper division sciences and the DAT, it really doesn't make a big difference other than to a few schools that aren't willing to bend their rules, like Tufts. Many of the schools that do say they don't take CC credit are more than willing to, I was accepted at one that said they didn't take any pre-reqs from CC.

i started my prereqs at CC and came out with a 4.0 science gpa.

did all the upper level courses at a major university and it dipped down to 3.95. Honestly, I'm not worried about the fact that I started at CC at all.

As long as you either do better or stay consistent while at a major university, it shouldn't even be a factor!

hi, i went to a cc first and got my associates of science degree ,,,,,,for science prereqs i have only taken one bio class and one chem class, with a grade of c for both,,,, then later i transfered to a 4 yr state university and majored in psychology, with a minor in phil,,, with a 3.2 gpa,,,,

Therefore im missing most of my prereqs for dental (or any health professional school),,,,,,so my question is can i take these prereqs at a cc? please let me know asap, thank you

Here's the thing... it depends on the school. While every school would rather you take your science pre-reqs at a university, many schools realize that as a non traditional student (not applying in your junior year, etc), it's rather hard to even get into those classes at a university, and it's rather expensive.

So, my advice to you would be to call some of the schools you're interested in, let them know your situation, and see what they say, usually they're very honest.

Some schools will be much more open to CC credit than others.

I think it depends. If you took the classes at a CC because classes at the regular University were too tough for you, it will look bad. But if you can give a good reason (money, location, family, etc) then I think it is acceptable. However, even if you take your pre-reqs at a CC, when you get to the University you better show that you can handle upper level courses. Just my 2 cents though.

your advice is very helpful and i appreciate it, it's not really about the classes being easy or hard at one institution than the other, it's more about financial situation, student loans, living expenses, ect., i actually got accepted to a post-bacc program at loyola university chicago,,,,got financial aid for 2 sems, full time, but the price difference would make my life so much harder, $663 per credit at loyola vs. $95 at a reputable cc around my area,,,,,,

the whole process of these prereqs are like going to the practice consitently to be ready for the game, which in this case is MCAT, the more dedicated one is at going to the practice and working his/her butt off, the more likely that he/she is gonna kick ass at the game (mcat) 🙂

You have a 3.4 now from a CC. Here is your chance to show that it is a legit gpa. The way to do that is to transfer and get a higher GPA at the uni taking harder classes (upper div). If you do this with a good dat, in any interview you can slap them across the face with some nice numbers if they try to take your CC courses into question.

GL.

Wait, are you premed(MCAT) or predental(DAT)? Otherwise, it sounds like you should be fine. I think most schools will understand that some people need to save money and have to go the CC route for that reason.

im leaning towards dentistry or optometry, i realize these schools have somewhat different required prereqs, and some only except certain amounts of cc credits,

Hmm, I think your best bet, is to just take what you can at a regular school if you can afford it, but if you have a legit reason (money) then schools can't deny you based on that, but make sure when you do go to the regular school, you prove that you can compete.

I took all of the prereqs at the community college, why would you pay so much money for a lower dev classes that are offered at ur CC.

I called a few schools in May to see if it was ok if I took a ceramics class at a CC. They said thats fine, as long as it's not a science class. Just call the schools your interested in and tell them about your situation. Im sure they'll understand. Best of luck!
