All programs going to 5 years long?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

Anyone know the truth on whether OBGYN programs are moving to all 5 year programs by 2006?

Though I hear rumor of it from time to time (most when the attendings are bitching about how we know nothing, thanks to the 80 hour workweek), I didn't know it was actually being considered.

OB fill rates continue to decline. Only 65% of spots were filled by US seniors in last years match. If they make the residency longer, it will become even worse.

I still believe that if they cannot teach me what I will need to know, 80 hours a week, 49 weeks a year, for 4 years... then maybe there is something more seriously wrong with the system.

Just my 2 cents...

This may happen if too many programs come in violation of the 80 hour workweek trying to get the surgical #'s needed. If surgical #'s decline then ACOG will institute an additional year but then again this will be true for many other residencies besides OB. The biggest hurdle is after on call for 24 hrs no new patients, which means a 7-8am case may not be performed by an on-call resident (usually this means the first/second years miss out on cases).

with the number of docs going into OBGYN declining every year, how could they even think of making the residency MORE undesirable??

well, considering surgery is 5 yrs and there are essentially two specialties here to learn - surgery (gyn) + ob, i wouldn't be too surprised.

There is nothing on the ACOG website regarding a move to 5 years.
