Anybody else on hold at OHSU?

From last year's info, looks like we're still about a month away from any news. Anybody have any new info or anything else that even slightly pertains to OHSU?

I'm on hold there. I would like to know of any information that people have as well.

PJ, you lucky bum. OHSU finally got around to rejecting me the same day that UW waitlisted me. Good luck with OHSU! I can't believe another school is making you play this crappy game.

If you don't mind, when did you interview?

Sorry to hear! This whole game is pretty crappy indeed. At the same time, I've gotten so used to it that I don't really expect much anymore when I visit the mailbox or check email. Good luck with UW!

I'm on the waitlist too - though, reading through a lot of the older posts and given the overall competitiveness of this year, I'm not really too hopeful. They like second-time applicants better, right? And as far as I understand, we may not really know what's up till June. Seems like they rank the first 120 people by May 14, and then take a few weeks to get the rest of the list out. Anyone else heard anything along these lines?

You're probably on the "hold" list, which means you could still get in before they determine the waitlist. From what I've heard, today is the last day of interviews. The remaining spots among the 120 (they've already admitted a number of people along the way as they interview) will probably be decided by mid May.

This is what I've heard from others, but can't verify for sure.

Good luck to all.

OHSU fills the majority of its class from the waitlist. Unless my memory is faulty, OHSU went to number 77 on the waitlist last year, and somewhere into the 90's two years ago. So if you are on the waitlist, you should have a good chance at admission.

Good luck

Thanks for the info guys. I'm assuming, though, that most of us are going to have to wait till at earliest mid-May to hear any news.

Yes, the waiting is what is agonizing about OHSU, more than any other school that I can think of. Many of you will be waiting until the end of June, unfortunately. If you really want to go to OHSU, then some of you will have to endure this. It makes it tough when you need to make plans to move, find an apartment, etc. But that is the way it is at OHSU. OHSU has its own rythmn and way of doing things in admissions.

But the school and the city are wonderful. Hang in there!

From my understanding, you're all pretty spot-on. Here's my impression:

1) A few people on hold get accepted around the May 15th deadline.
2) I'm not sure if everyone on hold gets offered a spot on the waitlist, but I have an inkling this is true (e.g. last year there were *exactly* 167 people on the waitlist--who makes that their quota?)
3) Last year the waitlist came out the second week of June due to some in-house error(s) (so I hear), but the year before I think it came out May 15th
4) We did go to #77 last year. Historically, they make it to about 100, but seeing how competitive it has been this year and last year, I am going to predict it'll be more like 77 again.
5) Waiting bites. But if you really want to be at OHSU, it's totally worth it. I felt like those months were worth waiting to spend the next, as-yet toughest, four years of my life here.
6) And once you start, no one asks you what number you were on the waitlist, what your MCAT scores were, or your undergrad GPA, and no one cares when you got in.

I kept telling myself I'd rather wait for good news that hear bad news sooner...but waiting is no fun.

Best of luck to those on hold 🙂

If someone does get accepted relatively late in the process, how hard is it to settle in Portland? I guess a more general question to ask before is: When should we start looking to settle somewhere, like find living arrangements, etc.?

Finding a place in portland will be relatively easy. Finding a place on the hill may be quite difficult later in the summer - the hill is crowded and there are relatively few residences up there. Good news is that express busses run from almost every part of town.

Visit: www.trimet.org for transit route maps.

Bubbles - what's the current deal for students and trimet passes?

I got to talk with someone in the office earlier this week. They apologized for being extremely backlogged (at least the person I talked with seemed to understand how late they are and was very nice about it).

Basically, the MD committee met today and they'll send out some letters this week. They meet again next week. I interviewed in March and my application was most likely considered today--if my interviewer was able to make it to the meeting. If s/he didn't make it, they'll consider me next Thursday. I've been promised a letter will go out either tomorrow or a week from tomorrow.

My understanding is that they're admitting 15-20% of interviewed people straight away and another 20% go on the waiting list. I predict that the WL will go higher than 77 this year. With the financial trouble, they can't afford to over enroll and will be more cautious. Also, I think the tort issue won't have much of an impact but will sway some who have choices resulting in a lower yield relative to last year.

Well, OHSU never overenrolls. They only offer an acceptance if they have an open seat. That is part of the reason the process can be so tiresome. Theoretically, there could be no waitlist movement if everyone they offered an acceptance to by mid-May matriculated, but that won't happen.

I think you are correct, though, about the tort issue. I wouldn't be surprised if that scared off some applicants. I am in agreement with my one interviewer on this point though. The tort issue just means that OHSU has lost its priveldged position and is now on a level playing field with all of the other medical schools in the country.

Hey-

When exactly did you interview? I came in on the 19th of March, and am curious if I've been evaluated yet. Don't want to call the office though, I always feel like I am one of a thousand bugging them incessantly.

Good LUCK everyone!!!!!!!

Do you mean 20% go on the hold list?

Gosh I hope they get caught up soon- I'm anxiously awaiting word- I interviewed March 12th and haven't heard anything. They said 2-3 weeks, but it's now been more than 4 🙁

When I interviewed (March) they told us we'd most likely have to wait until May.

Anyhow, I feel like I'm waiting for two potential dealbreakers: a rejection letter or a 25% increase in tuition...damn my non-Oregon domicile...

They just sent the admission packets to be people who were accepted in earlier rounds. Now a bunch of those people who are going to withdraw have to do it officially, or reserve their spot if they want it.
It should open up spots for those who are on hold or waiting for a decision.

were told that they would probably not find out until May, but before May 15th...ugh! uno mes mas! or is it uno mas mes? whatevs, you get it...

Even though the wait is long, it's nice to know there are others in the same boat. I'm like a puppy watching and waiting for the mail every day 😀 Good luck ya'll.

It's been a few days. Doubt there's any info, but I figured it's time to bump it.

Anyone heard anything yet? I'm thinking about calling the admissions office soon, but I don't want to be one of those annoying people. It's been five weeks since my interview though and I'm anxious.

Hello everyone, this is my first post!
I'm in the "final pool" for OHSU as well (interviewed in late December) and am anxiously waiting for their decision. If I do get in, I need to take a genetics course online somewhere to fulfill the admission requirement (I was a non-science major). Is anyone in the same situation? Does anyone know how strict they are regarding this genetics requirement?

I'm in the same boat with biochemistry (I could have sworn it said "OR biochem" rather than "AND biochem" somewhere). I'm hoping they'll take some closely related coursework (the synthesis and biochemistry of medicinal drugs, for example, upper level orgo class), cause I was really looking forward to just relaxing this summer.

From what I understand, I think all you need to do is take a class in which genetics is covered. However, I might be confusing this with another requirement, so don't take my word for it. Your best bet would be to call the school and get their opinion.

I've been waiting since November. At this point, I don't really expect anything when I open the mailbox. But at the same time, the waiting sucks.

I got my acceptance letter from OHSU last year on June 8th(ish). And I was somewhere in the top 10 on the waitlist, I was accepted before it was even officially ranked.

I was also short a pre-req in Math. (If I remember right the pre-reqs sheet said that Stats does not count followed directly by Stats highly recommended. Of course I only saw the "highly recommended" part). Anyways, I busted out an online Intro to College Algebra class through PSU over the summer in 2 weeks and was all gravy. If they accept you and you're missing a prereq, they don't care what you take as long as it qualifies.

I was in the same boat last year. There was an online Genetics course at Oregon State, and i think it starts in April. There's another one, but I can't remember if it ends in August or September. Anyhow, I would look into it and pay the minimal registration fee to get your registration there rolling.

In the meantime, contact admissions and find out if any of the coursework you've taken will suffice for genetics. If they're willing to look into waiving the requirement for you, it has to go through somebody else's desk, and that takes like another week or two, after you've submitted your course description info.

I ended up registering at OSU, then getting waived for the course. It all worked out!

I just got a letter (interviewed March 12th) saying that I'm on hold at OHSU. Does that mean I can still get rejected? Or does it mean that I'm automatically on the waitlist but they just won't know where until May 15th? I'm crossing my fingers for a low number on the waitlist. :luck:

As I understand it, the vast majority of applicants end up on hold. OHSU wants to give everyone equal consideration no matter when they applied - a big part of this is holding off on most decisions until the entire pool of applicants can be considered. There are a few acceptances at the extreme top end and rejections at the low end, but most will go through hold. That's how they explained it to me on interview day, anyway.

What is the grading scale for OHSU? Do they have Honors Pass? I've been accepted (back in late Feb) and i'm pretty confident that i'll attend...but i cant find the grading scale in the interview packet.

hey, i'm withdrawing from OHSU. Does anyone know how to do this? there doesn't seem to be an email address associated with admissions. thanks!

I would give them a call and leave a voicemail with the Dean (she gave her number with the interview packet.) You will likely have to send them a snail mail letter in addition. OHSU admissions seems to be alergic to the email.

In the applicant information packet under important contacts pg 13 Lori Toner is listed as the Office of Admissions contact and her email address is: [email protected] phone no: 503-494-5950

<60% (give or take depending on class)
60-70% Marginal
70-85% Satisfactory (Pass)
85-90% Near Honors
>90% Honors

ok withdrawn 🙂 good luck with the hold list everyone! :luck::luck::luck:

Tropicana...thanks! For purely selfish reasons, I hope lots and lots and lots more people start withdrawing too.... 🙂

thank you for withdrawing! the people on the waitlist thank you!

first off, Trop, right on for withdrawing and best of luck at U of Wisconsin - Go Badgers!

Anybody know when the hold list starts to move or shift to the tiered waitlist? I interviewed back in october and got the hold letter a month or so later ... I can't remember what they said about when things happen ... i just recall them saying that most folks get put on hold. once interviewers are wrapped up, they said they'd re-review the hold list and start adding folks one-by-one as those w/ acceptances withdraw.

any one on hold hear anything yet?

I interviewed in October as well. No word here. From last year's info, it seems that a lot of people heard around May 7, give or take a few days.

Anybody know when the last interview date is?

Hey Tropicanna - why did you pick Wisconsin over OHSU? Give me a compelling reason and I might open up another waitlist spot for OHSU!

i don't have a compelling reason, just personal ones.

1) at OHSU there's a lot of things to do if you're an outdoorsy person, but i'm not really into that. Madison is a really fun city with lots of young people and great night life.
2) Portland rains too much for my taste. (i'd rather freeze to death than drown.)
3) My gf whom i met on the interview trail is also going to Wisconsin.
4) Wisconsin gave me an 11K scholarship (waiving OOS tuition).

Sounds like a girl friend, biological imperative decision to me. It sounds like sex not rain to me. But good luck with that. Sometimes sex works out, often it does not. At least with rain, you have an umbrella.

Congratulations, but beware. I am convinced that the state of Wisconsin is not so much a state as an elaborate cult. Whenever I meet people who have lived in Wisconsin and I ask them about it, their eyes glaze over and they recite (Manchurian-candidate style):

Wisconsin is the best state in the country. Nothing bad happens in Wisconsin. Wisconsin is the most fun place in the world,
etc. etc. Once I made the mistake of commenting that I didn't think I would enjoy living in the midwest - boy, did people get weirdly angry with me...

I've been rejected from OHSU so have nothing on the original topic to contribute... but I went to college in Wisconsin. I loved it. But I'm a Pacific Northwesterner at heart, and I miss the mountains too much to seriously consider making the midwest home.

Tropicana, I have a friend who's just finishing up MSII at Madison and seems to be really enjoying it (well, as much as anyone "enjoys" the preclinical years). Good luck!

Watch the movie "Hot Fuzz." you'll love it 🙂

Wisconsin has great cheese, just sayin.
