DAT Bootcamp
Biology Test 3 #24

"While the chorion eventually forms part of the placenta, the allantois does not; therefore the answer choice is incorrect."

DAT Destroyer 2016
Biology #592

"In humans, the allantois is involved in oxygen and nutrient transport and becomes part of the placenta".

Any insights as to which is correct?

The allantois Does NOT become part of the placenta it becomes the umbilical cord.

In vertebrates that lay eggs,

The allantoisis a sac-like extraembryonic membrane that removes waste from the embryo.

The allantois exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide with the air outside the eggshell and serves as a disposal site for uric acid.

When mammals began using the placenta to nourish their unborn offspring, the needs of the embryos changed and some of the extraembryonic membranes were adapted to serve other purposes....... The chorion was adapted to form the embryonic portion of the placenta, and the allantois of mammals evolved to form part of the umbilical cord. The mammalian yolk sac doesn't contain any yolk, but it does maintain its well-developed vascular structure and contributes to the vascular system of the developing embryo.
