Could I see asthmatics as an A&I (and sell myself as an asthma researcher who's an A&I) or would I have to be a pulmonologist?

Do A&I's engage in vaccine research (the whole immuno aspect) or is that just the purview of ID?

Finally, are there options for fast-tracking residency into A&I fellowship?

Yes, allergists do see asthmatics but these are usually severe asthma that PCPs are unable to control or feel uncomfortable treating. Pulmonologists and ENTs also overlap and also treat asthmatisc; however, they are usually busy with the other obstructive/restrictive lung diseases or surgical procedures. Check out JACI journal; asthma is a bread and butter of allergists.

Vaccine research is associated with ID but there's a lot of experimental research with vaccinations and allergies (part of the allergen immunotherapy spectrum of treatment).

Lastly, there is the "research track" that is available where the there is 5ish+ years of training. 2 years clinical. The rest are research related. This research may or may not be related to fellowship. Some programs promise or give an advantage for A/I fellowship. Others do not. Details are program specific. Check out each program's website.

?

I'd be interested in vaccine work - but don't know how one would do research when practicing in clinic. I believe most A/I practice allergy in clinic vs immunology but maybe someone can correct me.

I also heard that a few A/I's work with stem cell and bone marrow transplant (for SCID pt's and such). Does anyone know how this track is sought?
The career page also mentions this: http://www.aaaai.org/professional-education-and-training/careers-in-a-i.aspx

I'm more into the immunology component of A/I because of the research and also b/c I want to work with kids that are sick; but don't know how one become involved in immuno - does it just depend on the institution?

cheers
