Hey gang,
Quick question as I can't find any info here nor ERAS, although have not called specific programs just yet. As a DO student applying to allopathic anesthesiology residencies, some of which are in MI and PA, I'm worried that by applying to DO traditional PGY-1 years, the AOA has some obscure rule in place that would pull me from my allo match (CY-1-3) if I eventually land a DO PGY-1 year. Any DO's here experience any probs with the allo match last year in the states that require an AOA PGY-1? Looks like Michigan's out now as there's no advanced program (unless they get dual accred. for their PGY-1).

Just making sure.

Thanks, and best wishes,
T

Im not a DO, but out of curiosity, If you are applying to a 4 year allopathic residency how can one of those years be osteopathic since they are accredited by different organizations? Wouldnt you have to do a allopathic internship if you want to do a allopathic residency(Pgy2-4)?

one option is to wait for the allopathic match, and see what you get.

if you match into an advanced residency, than you're good... and then maybe apply for AOA consideration for the PGY1 year...

if you match categorical, than you can scramble into an osteopathic internship, which shouldn't be too much of a problem...

by not ranking any of the osteopathic PGY1 years, you keep your self in the game for advanced allopathic programs, which is a good idea in my opinion....

You have a couple of options, you could apply to Osteopathic internship and only apply to allopathic advanced positions (this would limit your allopathic chances). Or as previously stated you can do catagorical allopathic and request approval from Osteopathic board for pgy-1 year, I hear it is "usually" approved. Matching to an osteopathic intern year will not change your allopathic residency status, except that there are much less allopathic advanced positions than catagorical. As long as it is just an intern year you will not be removed from allopathic match.

Appreciate the responses.

Usnavdoc - Actually, it's goofy in that five states (including MI and PA, where I have some apps aimed) require an AOA PGY-1 year in order to be employed, so I can only apply to advanced programs in those states. As Michigan just went to only categorical, my chances of matching there are nil, unless I do a PGY-1 AOA year, then enter their PGY 1-4 program. And I'm not interested in that.

The AOA has a stipulation (Resolution 42) that does allow one to apply for an allopathic ACGME PGY-1 year being accepted by the AOA, so being granted certification to practice in those five states, but it is a total crap shoot. If not accepted the by AOA, then I'd be screwed. No thanks again, and bummer.

Treasurefull2 - As the AOA match is a month before the ACGME, if I wait to see if I match ACGME advanced, then that would mean that I would have to scramble for an AOA PGY-1 year... which actually some have done, and some are planning to do this year.

Oh wait, I think you switched 'advanced' and 'categorical' in your response. So, yeah, as above I do not want to chance NOT getting Resolution 42 acceptance in a categorical ACGME program in one of the five states. Too dicey for my tastes, especially as the word on the street (in the EM residency world at least) is that the AOA is getting tougher on their leniency.

Corwin29 - Yeah, THAT'S my concern, being pulled from the allopathic match if I score an AOA PGY-1 year for a hopeful advanced program bid in PA (as MI's out). I really have to find someone at the AOA who knows what the he!!'s going on, as it's as clear as mud and I have been unable to get a definitive answer.

Thanks all, much appreciated!!

Hi again,

I was finally routed (through a slew of connections) to a coordinator of education at the AOA and asked her about my above concerns.

The skinny: As a DO student applying to an AOA internship, and concurrently to both ACGME categorical and advanced programs, that if ranked by the AOA program, one would be removed from the whole ACGME match regardless of circumstances (so both categorical and advanced). Yowzers, glad that was finally cleared up.

So, I'm removing my ERAS AOA TY apps. Then, if I match to an ACGME advanced program in PA, will be scrambling for an AOA TY.
