I just got devastating news that I failed step II comlex CE. This is my only black mark on my record. I am scheduled to go through the allopathic match in March. Rank lists close in about 8 days.

I am thinking I just quietly retake the exam and pass it without saying anything?

I am so upset right now

Do any of your programs require pass of step 2? and did you take and pass usmle step 2?

Do you mean if they require passage before graduation or signing of the contract? I am not sure what each program requires.

No, I did not take usmle step 2 and have no intention.

I would check with your schools' policy as to passing the test. From what I gather, residency programs will want you to have passed by the time you start. I would re-take once you know where you went wrong-that way you can tell the programs (if you released your scores?) that you are waiting the results.

Best of luck,

There are programs who will check to see if your scores are out before they rank you. And if you fail, they will not put you on their rank list. I would check with each program. If they asked about level 2 at your interview, I would worry. If you really don't want to mess up your rank list, then contact them after rank lists are due. I do know that during my third year, the PD was checking in the days before rank lists were due and darn near their exact words were "well, now that failing step 2 scores are coming in, our rank list is changing because we don't rank anyone who fails step 2 this close to match." And not a competitive residency either.

I would contact your Dean's office regarding the ramifications. They will likely be able to help you more than we can as they have specifics regarding your match list. They may have run into this situation before (in fact, likely) and may know answers to your questions regarding the specific programs on your list. You may be fine. You may have problems. This will likely be very program specific.

Make sure your allopathic schools you are applying to don't require USMLE Step 2... I know many I applied to require it before beginning, and I think if you are doing an allopathic training program, you need to take Step 3 (which requires step 2)... just be careful and make sure what you need to do for your programs...

Taking USMLE Step III was *not* a requirement for me in my allopathic residency. I'd be surprised to hear if it's a requirement for any allopathic program of its osteopathic residents.
