Hi everybody,
I am trying to figure out my list of schools to apply to. After grabbing the instate and nearby schools, I am left with far away schools. I would really love to go a school which is near a beach or has California type environment. Since, I am from another country and don't have much knowledge about different states and their specialty, I am looking for some help here.

Going through MSAR, it seems like all CA schools has about the same numbers..33 mcat, 3.7 gpa and about equal number of in-state and out-state students. I have a competitive GPA and good ECs but haven't taken my MCAT but I am shooting for 33 or above.

Please help me decide on schools, not just near the beach but others too.

Also, can you give the schools' average acceptance numbers if you know off the top of your head otherwise I can always look it up.

P.S. Please provide the full name of the schools (shortcuts don't help a non-native much 😉 )

Since you didnt specify whether it has to be a beach youd want to go to or just a beach, how about UT Galveston.

Thats pretty. Wonder how it'll look after a 9.0.

i want to laugh but that thought simultaneously sends shivers up/down my spine. you should bite your tongue lest half of So-Cal is flattened by a monster e-q. :scared:

i'd take my chances waiting for the big one to hit SD versus the average 6-10 hurricanes the atlantic sea board and gulf get every year.

Flattened and then swallowed up by the sea. Viva la East coast.

It is Nova Southeastern, not Nova southwestern

Well thats an exaggeration! Yea there was one year when we lost count of the hurricanes in the Gulf, and not to mention Galveston was hit pretty badly recently, but Id bet youd go through med school without another hurricane of that magnitude....besides youll know well in advance when a hurricane is approaching.
The more valid point is that you would much rather be in SD than in Galveston.

probably is an exaggeration, hurricanes and tornadoes scare the ish out of me. troof statement for the bolded!

and i like the surprise nature of earthquakes. personal preferences, i hate flood waters and high winds.

sounds like an end-of-the-world movie.

haha, nice, but still...wtf?? i'll show you a subduction zone.

OH.. and UCSD is one of the leaders in earthquake research and California has the best earthquake laws in the world!! In other words, we have the best buildings the withstand an eq. Just like a month ago, we were hit with a 7.3 just a little south and we're still in great shape. 😀

P.S.: I'm currently taking a Natural Disasters class. 😛

Minus the crappy/gloomy weather, terrible summers, uglier girls, less laid-back/grumpy people, etc. 😀

I hope so! There are CA's state honorary natural disaster.

Ahhh the class explains your e-q talk that sounded like swahili to me!

moral of the story - sd is awesome!

You can say that again!..

A friend of mine goes to Columbia. I think that Columbia is near a pretty nice beach. Not sure about the surfing though or the girls in bikinis. Hard to compete with Cali in those categories.

Columbia.. As in NYC?

Hmm Maryland is pretty nice. Our summers are pretty warm and we have *gasp* snow.
Yah, 5.0 barely hit southern florida. They almost never hit the mid Atlantic/ Calorina's.

that's funny because earthquakes prevent me from ever going to the left coast

Hmm, I live in Maryland now, but grew up in California. CA weather is much better - dry heat FTW. Also, it snows in CA, but I don't have to live in the snow and drive around with all the idiots who tricked MD into giving them a driver's license.

Back to the topic at hand instead of east coast vs. west coast

UCSD (perfect location)
UCI
UCLA
USC
UCSF (albeit cold, foggy norcal beaches)
Stanford (45 min away from more norcal beaches)
MUSC

Not sure about the other ones

Hi everybody,
I am trying to figure out my list of schools to apply to.

Your goal should be to vacation at the beach, and attend school far away from one. Seriously, do you need to be sitting in the library bemoaning the fact that you aren't on the beach, or wouldn't it be better sitting in the library happy that you are there?

well, that's true but how much of free time/vacation do med students really get? I would rather have an option to go sit at the beach an evening or run nearside and just freshen up.
Just that much would do it for me 🙂

If you want to go on the East Coast, definitely consider Medical University of South Carolina. Charleston has some really really nice beaches all around.

Probably much better than a category-5

Meh...you guys are crazy. I've lived on the coast of Texas most of my life, hurricanes dont bother me a bit. The last hurricane before Ike to do any significant damage to the island was 100 years ago. I'm ok with those odds.

Plus, you know 3 weeks before a hurricane hits and can go vacation for a week. 😀

Or you could just study on the beach. :ninja:

Maybe a cold beach is in order?

University of Minnesota Duluth.

I agree completely. 👍

You can't see earthquakes coming. One day Californians are going to get what they have wanted so much and secede (via earthquake).

I live about a mile from the beach and some summers don't go near the beach. It holds no attraction for me.

You may think that, but if you are spending an hour a day at the beach it makes the other 23 hours a day seem worse because you are wishing you were at the beach. If you live someplace cold and rainy, you aren't going to think about being outside, you will actually be able to get stuff done.
