Besides the idiotic decision upholding Obamacare, and little noticed because of that particular media circus, the Stolen Valor Act was ruled unconstitutional today. Probably not such an unexpected decision as the other, but yet another bonehead move by SCOTUS. Clearly common sense has escaped them this term.

Do we really want the government regulating the kind of idle lies people tell each other?

It would have been an extreme overreach if the SCOTUS would've upheld the Stolen Valor Act. Next law would be Lying to Wife About How She Looks In Her Dress Act. Free speech is free speech except at Airports and Movie Theatres lol.

That's why I said it wasn't unexpected. However, the dissenting opinion by Justice Alito is a well-reasoned piece on why the law should have been upheld.

I respectfully disagree, JWK. I,and SCOTUS surely, respect and revere our Military men and women. I just think the grounds here, being first amendment went out of bounds. The opinion gives great examples of the "harm" and "value" that words need to cause/take away in order to be limited. It's sooooo lean. Claiming you won a medal, like an idiot, when you did not, simply doesn't cause that type/level of harm as would threatening POTUS, yelling fire in a movie theater, etc etc. It's somewhere between porn and south park. ; )

Agreed. For once. 😉

No. I value free speech. But, soldiers died for those medals. Soldiers risked all so we could be free. I respect the decision but certainly imposing a penalty or tax for lying about a medal wouldn't have been out of bounds for this court. 😀
