Here is my "required" and recommended book lists for first semester:

(Req.) JEKEL - Epidemiology, Biostat, and Preventative Medicine
(Req.) DEVLIN - Biochem w/ clinical corr.
(Req.) THOMPSON - Genetics in Medicine
(Req.) WILLIS - Medical Terminology
(Req.) BICKLEY - Bates Guide to Physical Exam

Total Cost for all required: about $270 off amazon.

(Rec.) GORDIS - Epidemiology
(Rec.) MORTON - Study Guide to Epidemiology/Biostat
(Rec.) BORON - Medical Physiology
(Rec.) PRABHU - Bates Guide to Physical Exam Case Studies

Total Cost for all recommended: $170 off Amazon.

The first grouping is of required book and the second is of the recommended books. I'm looking for some input on alternate books to use if other books may be better. For instance I've heard of using Lippincot's Biochem and BRS/RR books in place of many biochem books.. Any possible suggestions you guys may have for better books than the ones they listed would greatly be appreciated. Or if you have used any of the above books let me know what you think. I'll probably stick with the epidemiology books they want us to use but the genetics/biochem/Bates books are where im really looking for input. Thanks guys!

I doubt you actually need Bates--they should teach you everything you need to know in workshops. Physiology by Costanzo is a great text. I also doubt you actually need a book for genetics, or biochem for that matter.

You think i'll be able to get by with just the syllabus for those classes? I went ahead and bought the Epidemiology Preventative Med book cuz it was only like 40 bucks at the book exchange today.

i have 2009 First Aid Step 1 already.

talk to upperclassmen at your school.
Many probably just use class notes, with no book.

I'd say Costanzo Physio was the only book I've found truely useful so far during school. I use class notes along with some board review books for quick review.

Ok. Thanks gman. Thats more than likely what I'll end up doing. The BRS books are pretty cheap on Amazon. I've heard some people recommend High Yield or Rapid Review books over BRS.. Any thoughts on that?
