Altius Practice Tests

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The Altius tests feel very similar to a real MCAT, just a tad bit more difficult. Not because the questions/passages are more difficult than you might see on a real MCAT, but because the frequency of difficult questions is higher. So yes, I would say that they have a good representation of graphs, charts, and data analysis questions.

However, I would say that just doing the Altius exams wouldn't be enough - you need to follow their whole program. Their whole program is fantastic and I would really recommend it to anyone.

Hey Joe, so during my time as a student for Altius I was somewhat privy to information regarding how Altius designed their exams. I know for a fact that during the development they categorized every question and passage that the MCAT has ever released and looked at frequency of question types, word counts for passages, figure counts etc. After doing the complete analysis, they designed their tests based on the most recent trends. While taking the exams, I found there to an abundance of questions regarding data interpretation from graphs, charts, experiments, etc. Almost every single passage I took on their tests had a citation at the bottom with a primary research article or something to that nature. I think the website they have that explains their tests is honest and accurate. They used to have a practice half length exam, not sure if they still do or not, but even if they don't, I'd say buy 1 full length exam and see how it is, I bet you will find it is better than any other test you have used.
Thank you for the insight. I am planning on taking them before I test in June 17. Did you score better on the real thing than on the practice FLs from Altius?

I scored about 9 points higher on my actual MCAT than the average of all my Altius practice tests.
I scored 2 points higher on my actual MCAT than the AAMC practice test.

How much are the Altius tests, do they reflect the AAMC style well? Can I buy them in chunks? I was thinking of getting 2-3 exams from diff companies, just to make sure I see as many diff types as possible, before I do the AAMC tests.

@DaAlienist, I'm glad you asked about our tests being available in chunks. All last year, they were sold only in a set of ten for $300, but that has changed. They had a good reason for doing this, because Altius designed the 10 tests as a holistic teaching experience. We know it is the popular idea to "sample" from several companies right now, but:

1) We are confident our exams are the closest possible AAMC match. You have to decide that for yourself by comparing ours and others to the AAMC. If you decide that is true, more of a sampling of less-accurate tests isn't actually better.

2) Each of the 10 exams gives you experience with something different that causes students frustration on exam day. Some exam forms have above-average calculations, some have very little physics, others quite a bit. Sometimes all of the hardest passages with the most questions are front-loaded, which throws you off your game. We track all of these test day trends and try to give you at least one exam that replicates that issue so you won't be surprised on test day.

3) Experimentally-heavy (Section-Bank-like) passages are the future of the MCAT and you need lots of practice to own those passage types. Recent examinees (see Jan Reddit Reaction Threads) were "floored" by the experimentally-heavy nature of their real MCAT: http://bit.ly/Jan28ExamReaction. We've seen the exam as more "Section-Bank-like" since the 2015 transition, so we've crafted exams that both "smack you" with experimentally heavy reasoning, and a few (but less overall) that have more Q-Pack like questions. Bottom line, if you take only a few exams you miss out on something we were trying to warn you about and give you experience with BEFORE your test.

You asked how much the tests are, so here is that info:
1 Test = $40
5 Tests = $175
10 Tests = $300

@IWillMakeIt1, That really depends on when you took those exams. They are doing a score scale and standardization update on all of the FLEs. Last year most people went up from a couple points clear up to a dozen points or so from the Altius exams. The new scale predicted January test taker's scores by +/- 1-2 points. So, the new scale is more lenient. This is happening right now as we speak, so FLE1-FLE3 has the new scale we were told that FLE4-10 will gradually be updated between now and mid to late April.

I honestly think that Altius is extremely representative of the real exam. I think their tests are better than any of the third party companies.

Hi Altius Premier Tutor,

Do these codes still work? I tried using one of the codes during registration for the tests (March 12, 2017), but after pasting one of the codes, the regular price did not change. Do I have to submit first in order for the codes to apply? Since the fine print says, "All sales are final," I wanted to make sure the codes work before I submit my payment information.

Thanks!!

Do you have discounts on your everywhere course?

Not that I know of, other than the fact that you get 1-on-1 tutoring plus a complete classroom program, plus tests, etc. for about 2/3 of the price you'd pay for any other classroom program plus 1-on-1 tutoring. So the regular price is pretty killer already. That said, the Enrollment Directors may offer occasional deals. Call the office at 435.671.5783 on Monday and they can help you better than I can.

A friendly reminder that posting promotional codes in the forum outside of the classifieds section is considered advertising and is against TOS.

Okay...no problem, but please clarify: We've been told that w/ exhibitor accounts we can answer any question about our products that was asked of us directly. I believe that is specifically stated in TOS; if not I've read it elsewhere in an exhibitor Q&A or something.

The user @DaAlienist asked us "How much are the Altius tests?" and "do you have to buy them in chunks?" Right now the tests are all 50% off, but would I have to obscure/hide that fact when answering the question "How much are the Altius tests?" Another user asked for help with codes he was trying to use on our website.

If answering those questions violated TOS, then I would conclude that exhibitors can only answer some direct questions, not truly any question. And further, if someone asks about pricing, one can only answer with the "regular price" and not with the current price, if that price requires a coupon code. I think some users would not be happy at all with us if they asked for the price, we quoted the regular price, and they later found out about the sales price.

I would not have posted a list of discount codes just to promote them. But when someone asked for the current pricing I did not think for one minute that answering that question would violate TOS.

I've used Princeton Review, Next Step, and Altius tests... I take the real MCAT May 13th so I can't compare them yet. I will say the Altius tests have tons of graphs and charts. They also have many questions that require you to analyze and interpret the graphs and charts. So far I prefer the Altius tests over the others I have taken. They seem more professional. Some of the princeton review tests had really weird drawings, charts, etc... also they had some typos.

I am not sure if anyone reached out to you, but the codes will work even if the checkout screen doesn't reflect the updated price. The emailed receipt will have the discounted price. I had the same worry too but spoke with a rep from Altius.

I double-checked with the office again because several students have expressed that concern. They verified that the coupon codes are working, but the adjusted price doesn't display until the following page. They plan to change it soon so that after you enter a code the price will be updated on the same page. In the meantime, I can reassure you that it does work and charges you the adjusted price. PM me if you have any questions or need help.
