Haha. This could probably become its own (very much off-topic) thread. Twilight: good or bad? 😍 or :barf:? Is it as cool as Harry Potter? :d

Past couple of nights, my poison of choice has been amaretto and coke. (I ran out of rum! It's terrible!)

As for HP vs TL, I'm gonna have to go with HP. Read all the books, they were a good, quick read. Saw two of the movies, and they were a little blah.

Never read twilight, and have no intentions of going to see the movies either. Not my thing. I can handle kids on broomsticks. Vampires, not so much.

HP no contest! Although I admit I did read the Twilight series, they're just not very well written even if they are mildly entertaining. My friends want to go see the New Moon while somewhat intoxicated... 😳 mainly because the first movie was so ridiculous. Also, I'm pretty sure half of my interest in going to vet school in the UK stems from hopes it'll be like Hogwarts and that I will somehow find out I'm a witch... 😍

the worst part about twilight is that they started the movies when all the sudden vampires became cool in the teenie-bop world. now there are a billion movies/tv shows coming out about vampires. and instead of focusing on just the plot, they hire all these new teen stars that kids will drool over like robert pattinson... are you kidding? hes so ugly, his eyes look freaky almost like a vampire would in real life. why do the naturally tilt up?? yuck

IMO zombies rule. and the movies about them are GREAT!
dawn of the dead
night of the living dead
shaun of the dead

and i would also choose HP over TL

Never read HP or seen any of the movies. Same goes for twilight (not planning on ever reading/seeing it either). Just not my type of story/movie. If I had to pick one I would go for HP...magic vs. vampires. Magic wins.

:highfive:...we would get along well. i'm so glad that you included shaun of the dead!

Twilight is one of those things (the others include such gems as Jenny McCarthy's mother's intuition, the time my neighbor ran into my car while it was parked in my own driveway, title 9/affirmative action, and people who criticize me eating fries with mayo) that can throw me easily into a 30+ minute rant about the worst book series ever, that I can't believe I actually read and that people think is good. That last book of the series was the biggest crapheap of literature I have ever read in my entire life.

HP on the other hand is an excellent series. No comparison.

....lmao....fries with mayo? That IS a little gross, but I put ranch dressing on everything, so who am I to judge? And the last book was really, really horrible..along with the first movie.

Oh no you didn't.

Try it with good mayo (not gross hellman's or best foods or whatever) and you will probably like it. I picked it up living in France, where the mayo is divine.

I like off topic distractions. 🙂

I read the first 3 harry potter books but stopped for some reason. Saw the first movie and did like it. However...

Pirates (I know not a book series...) with drop dead gorgeous Johnny Depp takes the cake. How can you pass up that Pirate charm and sexy ass!? 😀

Read both HP and the twilight series, and HP wins hands down. I do think the main appeal of the twilight movies is the eye candy, which i agree some of the actors do NOT qualify as, and girls wanting their life to be that way. The Harry Potter movies are just disappointing because the books are so good...but if they were original I would probably love them

I have not and will never read the twilight series. My main reason?

I don't need unrealistic expectations about love 😀

I've read all of HP, most of them more than once. It's a good series.

I started reading Twilight last week... I've read too many good books lately and wanted a dose of non-school WTF. I mean, sparkly vampires? Seriously? And it irritated me how she kept comparing the vampires to cats. Even a sleeping cat is more interesting than her *tragically conflicted* vampires.

YES!! I love love love Shaun of the Dead... a lot of people don't care for the British humor but I could really watch this movie over and over, which doesn't happen a lot.

That last book of the series was the biggest crapheap of literature I have ever read in my entire life.

I could not agree more with this statement... It was HORRIBLE. I also hated the blatant religious overtones throughout the series (no offense to anyone!).

Shaun of the Dead was epic win, no matter how you slice it.

I'm not big on the serious zombie movies... or scary movies of any sort.

Johnny Depp is not only devastatingly sexy, he's also such a good actor - look at how many roles he's played, and he's done so well. I kinda love him in Fear and Loathing... but pirates with eyeliner are hott too.

And I just realized that I'm saying exactly what BLACKAT just said... haha.

To those who haven't finished reading HP... why? They're such easy books to read, and I find them so incredibly entertaining that I can't imagine anyone disagreeing with that. :d IF you've never tried (*cough*minnerbelle*cough*) then... well... you should.

I'm also fine with everyone reading Twilight so that you can form your own opinions. Definitely can't call it 'well-wriiten' or a 'literary masterpiece' by any stretch, but it does entertain. And the last book creeps you out a bit too (if that's what you call a happy ending... *shudders*)... here's what my friend said about it, and I think she's right.

Meyer might not be a "good writer" by any stretch of the imagination, but, the woman is a genius. She created this obsessive love story that preys upon that fantasy (that most of us keep locked up deep inside) that we'll one day find that person whose love for us runs that fine line between "perfect" and obsessive. We'll find that person who would do anything for us, even die for us.

AS for the movies, Robert is a fine lookin' guy (not my type, but I'll acknowledge that much) but his 'internal conflict' too closely resembles 'I haff to poo.'

And Kristen Stuart can't act her way out of a paper bag. I want to throttle her every time she bites her lip.

Here's a funny Twilight parody... I laughed so hard.

I still haven't read the last HP... mainly because I'm in denial. I get so mad/sad when I finish a series!

And yes, Kristin Stewart is possibly the worst actress of all time. She can't even act herself in TV interviews. It's incredibly awkward!

That parody is hilarious. Taylor Swift wins at life!

I've never read any of the twilight books and only saw about 15 minutes of the 1st movie before I fell asleep. I have however read all (more than once) of the HP books and have seen all the movies 🙂 So HP wins for me!

I do love vampire stories and all, but I think the twilight story (come on, sparkly vampires?) is just not my style. True Blood on the other hand....AMAZING 🙂

Anyone here watch True Blood?

I love True Blood-- it's a secret/guilty pleasure, haha. When I got tired of schoolwork this semester I read all of the books in a week!

I waited until the first Twilight movie came to our campus cinema, and then watched it as a comedy. It's a pretty hilarious movie when you're surrounded by a bunch of other uni students who are watching it from a non-serious point of view.

Oh, and I've read the books. I have family in Canada who rarely see me, and apparently that's what you buy when you walk into a Chapters and ask somebody what a late-teenage girl would like.

I admit I'm a little obsessed with Trueblood. It's the best show on HBO hands down (Curb is a close second though- Seinfeld reunion this Sunday!😀).

They eat fries like that in Italy too. I didn't pick it up though. I don't like mayonnaise, with potatoes, on sandwiches or otherwise. XD

well, i don't like true blood at all (probably due to the Y chromosome, I don't know) but I love Curb. This Sunday is going to be legendary! Also I love The Life and Times of Tim (if you like curb or seinfeld, you'll LOVE this show) and Bored to Death.

Well, my husband loves true blood as well so it probably isn't the y chromosome. Or my husband is just weird 🙂.

I love Bored to Death too! I think HBO has really good shows overall.

my boyfriend will watch it with me! though it's more out of courtesy than because he really likes it, hahaha. normally I play some video games with him as a trade.

I found this really amazing article about the objectification of Robert Pattinson. Here is a glorious little snippet if you don't want to read the whole thing (http://tigerbeatdown.com/?p=579):

"Edward Cullen is porn. Weird, pre-sexual, socially conservative, deeply repressed and ****ed-up porn, but in a world where ladies’ sexy feelings are fenced in with shame and warnings of danger from Day 1, is it any wonder that porn which consistently ties sex to death and fear and the urgent need for repression is selling to the girls? I mean, consider: Edward Cullen has no characteristics, as a person, other than wanting to “protect” Bella and being beautiful and gorgeous and perfect all the time. (And also an insufferable *******, but that seems more like a mistake than a purposeful effort to give him a personality.) He has no goals in life other than being with Bella. He is over a hundred years old, and he’s never had sex with another person. He’s never wanted to have sex with another person. There is not and will never be a person or a thing or an event that is more important to him than (eventually) having sex with Bella. He is an object designed for the gratification of female desire. He’s the most ridiculous person who’s so amazing at everything, and he’s so beautiful you creamed yourself. And that’s it. And we’re used to dudes writing ladies this way, we’re even used to dudes writing ladies this way and passing it off as “literature,” but the idea of a female author writing a male character in this way, for the pleasure of other ladies, is profoundly disconcerting. Even to me! Because it’s backwards."

WOW! SDN bleeps out curse words all on its own! I thought this whole time everyone did it on purpose

**** ******* piece of **** son of a ****** forum makes us ******* censor our ******* ****** posts because they're ******* **********... okay, those are all asterisks. :d

I applied to four schools I have yet to hear from any of them. Two of which have already sent out invites. I'm trying to not go nutso but it's not really working. Thankfully the school I really want to go to doesn't interview and wont notify me until early jan. I just wish that the two schools I didn't get interviews from would just reject me already. I hate this in between phase.

Also, people who have interviews BE HAPPY damn it! It could be worse. All of us who have yet to hear anything hang in there. We got this. <3

Not that I don't agree, but you didn't read the whole thread, did you 😛

I did read it, I just got to the thread late. Don't get me wrong I'm a complete twilight fan (team jacob for life!) but I wanted to respond to what this thread was initially created for lol.

It just made me laugh to see a "real" post after all that other junk!

This has been an interesting thread to say the least. No comments from me about Twilight, but I will say I prefer Miracle Whip as well, twelvetigers. 👍

Miracle Whip Rocks. BBQ sauce on fries though.

Wait hold on. What are these...collections of words?

I don't think any of these "books" you guys are talking about are peer reviewed...why are you reading them?

never read HP. If my mom found them she'd burn me at the stake or drown me!(tee~hee) Read twilight, mt friends recommended it...ended up reading all of them, and saw twilight, not really sure why though...? fell asleep within the first 20 minutes of the movie. Kirsten Stewart can not act to save a panda. And Robbert Pattinson. not my cup o' tea. He dosn't really give of masculine vibes, I read somewhere that as a young-er boy he dressed up as a woman named Claudia, and that he was make-up on a regular basis(as in off-screen)

LOVED fire-light though!!!!

I agree that Miracle Whip is the best! Delicious... 👍

As far as HBO shows go, I also love Bored to Death. I haven't seen much of True Blood because I have friends who have read the series and they want me to read the books first. So do we have any Flight of the Conchords fans? I loved Rome too before they gave it the boot. I can't wait for the Rome movie!! 😍

Flight of the Conchords=amazing.

I don't get HBO. 🙁 Basic cable in this town is expensive enough as it is! It's a monopoly.

I do need to read the Suki Stackhouse books, or whatever they're called. I'm not buying them - I don't buy books unless I've already read and loved them. And, well, getting them from the library just hasn't happened yet. I borrowed the Twilight books, or that never would have happened either.

My book collection is therefore pretty small. I have the HP books, a couple (awesome) dragon series by Yolen and Wrede, couple unicorn books by Coville, some Stephen King books I got for free, SOTL/Hannibal/Red Dragon, a limited edition copy of Alice in Wonderland, LOTR, Fight Club, and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Aside from a few books on vet shiz and dog breeds (and a biochem textbook I couldn't part with) that's it.

Maybe I can have a library/study in my house someday, but I want only old, faded, tattered versions of classic books. I LOVE old books.

Wooo Miracle Whip FTW!

Machien, why is HP (a book about wizards and magic) off-limits, but Twilight (a book about sex-crazed vampires) is just fine? What's the Mom-logic here?

I have a dirty little secret...I collect and read beach trash/chick lit. I'm an addict!

Now, shhh, don't tell anyone!

As for HP/Twilight, how exactly is twilight mother approved? and hp isnt?

Yes! I was in Portland about a year ago and I went to this huge bookstore called Powell's that had a "rare book room" that had like original copies or early versions of a lot of classic books... they also had some signed copies. It was one of the coolest places I've ever been!

I bet it smelled great. I love old book smell.

*looks around* What? C'mon, it's not THAT weird.

No, I like that smell too. I have a copy of Origin of Species from 1903, it smells so weird, I love it. but I like a lot of weird smells...like gasoline and skunk from a distance.

Ever notice how sometimes skunk and puppy breath smell the same? I LOVEEEE puppy breath, skunk- not so much😀
