I'm 6.125% Cherokee by my great-great-grandmother. Does this make me an URM?

Guys is there any big expensive scholarships I can get for my Native American heritage?

I guess it depends on if you are really connected with your native american heritage, although, i heard somewhere that 1/8 is the rule. 1/8 seems kinda arbitrary though. If youre part of the community, then you fulfill the point of URM status. And if you're not identifiable as part of the community in any way even if you're 1/2 whatever, then you don't really fulfill the point of URM imo. But opinion aside, I have a feeling the answer is no, you're not URM.

I know that you probably didn't really want an answer to your question anyway. But you do realize that URM is a vastly different concept from affirmative action, right? I mean, I'm technically an ORM, lol (over-represented minority), and at the moment I'm taking care of mostly URM patients.

I know. Kick rocks.

You could have at least read it. I'm sure the mods will get a kick out of it.

Some of you here may have even wanted to say it yourself. But you know the punishment is crucifixion for such a sin.

1. You are talking about disadvantaged status and affirmative action which is not what URM is about. If it were, it would encompass a lot more groups.
2. You coudln't get in because a URM took your spot? 🙄 Grow up, stop being an emo, and stop blaming your **** on other ppl. You're giving non-URMs like me a bad name.

Yeah so? You sound offended.

I'm offended by the fact that you didn't bother to read what I said or understand what I said because the entire point of this topic was to go off on a temper tantrum on the first person to say you're not a URM.

Meh. I give his troll attempt a 3/10.

It's not you. You were very helpful here. I got my message out. That is all that matters at this point.

I can't wait to start med school in the fall. 😍

hey everyone,
I am a female mexican-american and (I suppose) I will be applying URM to a few MD and many DO programs for 2009-2010. I've taken the MCAT twice now, only to have the same mean of 26N (29 best subscores). I feel I am competitive for DO schools but what allo schools will look beyond my MCAT scores? My gpa isn't great either: 3.2 🙁
I have pretty good ECs, with one publication in the area of drug discovery and >500 hours volunteering at a free-clinic.
Any advice?

Troll that is banned.

cry about it. 😴

You spend all this energy telling people how you're tough and can play the hand you were dealt. Now you're complaining because you can't get a scholarship?

Crap. Rendar5 beat me to my own point. Where are my tissues? I have to go cry now. Oh my god! I can't find MY TISSUES! My life is so hard.

Tell me why I'm not an URM. I guarantee you don't have as many people like me as you do blacks and hispanics in medical school.

I think you're talking about disadvantaged status. Underrepresented minority and disadvantaged status mean different things... at least if you're talking about marking something off on your application?

Who cares? You don't fit the criteria. Stop whining.

The saddest part about your combination of anger and ignorance is that you don't even realize that for every minority in a med school class, there are 1-2 under-qualified students who are there because of legacy. How do I know? I served on a medical school admission committee. So you can take your majority rage and focus it on your buddies who got in because of mommy or daddy.

And I have Aspergers and I guarantee you there is no scholarship for what I've got or for what I've lived through.

Asperger's, eh? Sounds more like a behavioral manifestation of Tourette Syndrome. Have you heard of Google? Have you ever typed "Asperger's" and "scholarship" into the search bar? First hit.

Oh, and those "big-expensive" Native American scholarships, do you have any idea who funds them? The tribes themselves, or trusts established by the government in decades-old treaties. Why don't you complain that you're not eligible for this, or this, or even this. Perhaps you practice and earn this one.
Or maybe you could just study harder and troll less...

Show up with your membership materials from your tribe and you can likely make the case for having some identification with your ancestors. My guess is that you could have cared less about your Native American ancestor since you asked the question in the first place. If you have to ask, you are likely not an URM.

Ok I confess...I'm the thief who stole your spot.

I loved every second of stealing your seat muahahaha :meanie: and I'm coming back for dessert, baby lol

is this tool banned yet?

You're disadvantaged and you have a compelling life story for a personal statement if you phrase it right, which could easily get you more admission help than being a URM. And I can attest to the above that at my school, URMs make up at most 5% of the student body remember that most hispanics are not URMs)? legacies make up maybe 10%. And all of them could've made it into med school no problem URM or not. URM is just a bonus, just as me being able to speak spanish is a bonus (go white boys), just as someone's unique life experiences of growing up with nothing or working as a lawyer for 10 years are a bonus.

Just out of curiousity but I was wondering if I was considered a URM too - I'm half Pakistani and half white (mix of Irish and Dutch)... I'm kind of a mutt - best of both worlds baby!

Schools define whether or not you are a URM, but by definition it is ethnic groups that represent a certain portion of the general population and that percentage is highly under represented in the medical field. Meaning if (for instance) Mexicans are 10% of the nation but only 1% of doctors are Mexican, they are under represented. As a Pakistani I think you would most likely categorize yourself as South Asian (I'm assuming) which would actually make you a ORM over represented minority. Just my two cents!

Darn it! I missed the fun.
That's okay.
If you were a male applying for vet med, you would be a minority. The ratio is like 85/15 female to male. In some classes it's 20/1.

However, we are a different kinda crazy than what you have going on.
