Am I black-listed if I started but did not complete my residency?

Long story short: Due to circumstances out of my control (death in the family) I found myself in a situation where I was not going to be able to finish my residency requirements. My director was less than understanding about the situation, things happened, and I left the program.

My questions are: will I be black-listed from career advancement because I don't have a completed residency? Would I ever be able to go back and complete a residency (with a different program)? Or am I too much of a risk/failure to be considered?

Any advice you all can offer would be great. I know the truth hurts sometimes, but I would rather get most truthful advice I can.

Thanks

Don't quote me on this but I believe if you do the Match, get selected, then say no to that site then you are permanently banned from ever participating in a match ever again. I would imagine that still applies as it might be taken as a way to circumvent the ban.

Thank you for your reply. Just to clarify, I matched and started at my site. I was there for almost the entire year but had to leave before completing my residency.

Would I still be banned from the match then?

Thanks!

Every single one of the residents who gave me a tour of the facilities during my interviews said that quitting a residency is pretty much career suicide. Everyone knows everyone, and people talk.....sorry for your loss, hopefully your future employer is more understanding of your situation

I don't think it'd be that beneficial for you to do a residency again if you went through most of one, considering you'll probably be doing very similar things. Hopefully future employers will be understanding.
