I am about to wrap up my first year of school. I had thought about purchasing some used First Aid books and reviewing the material in them from first year. I honestly don't want to start reviewing for boards in a year having not seen some of the material in almost two years.

What is your advice since you are actually doing the studying right now?

It's really not necessary. Just review things like physio as you learn the path. As for anatomy/neuro/embryo, maybe hit that once through after spring break to remind urself, but otherwise, I would say no need to do to anything, especially during your last free summer ever! Just study hard 2nd yr and the rest will fall into place. I would suggest using some review books along with ur 2nd yr courses tho - def get BRS Path and use it along with classes and maybe get the Robbin's Qs. But you might wanna save those qs for use during actual boards studying.

You're not crazy, but it's not necessary. The only thing that might be a good idea is to skim through a book like FA and jot down things that helped you remember difficult material (mneumonics etc). That way your FA is sort of customized when you go to start the intensive step1 studying.

That's a good way to burn yourself out.

Your pathology and pharmacology course should be a good review of your first year courses. Take the summer off.

I swear my Summer between 1st and 2nd year I was preoccupied with painting houses and drinking as many beers/jack and cokes as I could in a night. I literally didn't start thinking about Step One until March before I took it.

Do average med students actually stress out about this damn test during their first year?

totally agree....burn out is inevitable.....to the OP: enjoy the last summer vacation of your life.

Besides, the boards are more year 2 info. The first year stuff is just the backbone on which it is built. That really long physiology course you took first year? Its no more than 5% of the first aid book. Histo? barely in first aid. Most of the stuff wont make sense until you learn the pathology anyway. Enjoy your summer my friend! you wont have many left after this one.

I agree with the above posters.

If you are set on looking at some books this summer, do not spend more than a weeks worth of time recapping. Do those first few sections of first aid pertaining to the first year. Obtain a QBook, and do the Biochem, Anatomy and Behavioral question sections with explanations, and you should be well reviewed and summarized for year two.

most people here are not recommending 1st year review unless its like 1 week or less. Did anyone who is giving the advice actually study over the summer and find it a total waste? or is everyone just assuming if they had reviewed that it wouldnt make much difference? What about anyone who did do some kind of review and found it beneficial? It seems as if nobody recommends reviewing but about 1/4 of my class says they're going to do some review this summer. So there must be some people out there who actually did study.

lol, i'm doing the same thing McShades is. But come on, how can I not? I want to get into a competive specialty and I feel like I can review things relatively easily now; whereas i might forget them in a year. In addition to that, I'm realizing what holes my curriculum has, for example a complete lack of embryology (since it was covered withing a 1 quarter anatomy course).

So, along these lines, does anyone know what the subject breakdown for step1 is? ie. do I really have to worry much about embryology, or is it like 1% of the Q's?
