i am a premed major, and I know it's early, but essentially have what I want to accomplish long term figured out (I have reasons I will get in to later)
-ultimately, I want to do cranial nerve surgery. I became interested in this as a patient, I have Trigeminal Neuralgia and have had two operations, a third may be on the way. There are so few people qualified to do the high end operations required to successfully treat these conditions. A lack of understanding on the medical community is also a major problem.
-I've spoken to several neurosurgeons in this field, and have been encouraged by each to peruse it. I know what the lifestyle is like, and training. I'm in for a lot of it!

My question is what the title says, Am I crazy? What should I be doing to make myself more competitive to get in to med school? I am currently looking at Saint Louis University. Any advice welcome

First, let me just say that trigeminal neuralgia really sucks and is really painful so I understand where you're coming from. Assuming that your condition doesn't prevent you from performing daily work as a physician due to the pain, you'd definitely be able to provide a unique perspective to patients. I would agree with the above poster, however, that you should work on getting into medical school before deciding the specialty you want to pursue. Peruse this site and you will find great advice on how to mold yourself into a successful applicant. Best of luck.

Get the highest GPA possible. Engage in interesting and helpful ECs. Position yourself to get strong Letters of Recommendation. Do not get into legal or institutional difficulties. Read these forums widely.
