So while filling out the 'Dentistry Experience' section of the AADSAS application, it just struck me that listing my own personal experiences as a patient with an orthodontist (back when I was 12-14 yrs old) might be a good idea.
Does anyone actually list personal experiences as a patient? Is it worthwhile or am I drunk?

I'm going to go with the latter.

You are drunk, quite possibly even crunk.

It says in the FAQ somewhere that experience as a patient is not an acceptable mention for that section.

aww, you guys are harsh! C'mon, I don't think many of us would post the things we do without being inebriated..... 🙄

Anyway, was there something specific about your experience that makes you feel it'd be a good thing to add to the experience section? Maybe instead of calling it actual "shadowing", you can incorporate it into your personal statement as a factor that contributed to a life-long interest in dentistry. Or perhaps your former orthodontist would be a good one to do your current shadowing for (if you aren't already).

Hmmm...ok. I just looked through the AADSAS faq didnt see any mention of anything like that. Wanna tell me where exactly it says that?

But either way, it seems like its not a good idea...fair enough. Thanks.

(gonna hold off on the tequila until this application is submitted)

It's not necessarily a bad idea. Now granted 99% of the time its a horrible idea...but if you use it the right way or have a unique experience, sure why not. But I wouldnt make it a major part of that section.

my dream of becoming an optometrist solidified after a very profound experience as a customer purchasing a pair of lancome eyeglasses at Lenscrafter. as i walked through the crystal clear door i was greeted by posters of huge faces with fantastic looking glasses. little did i know...

I think any experience as a patient would better serve in the personal statement.

If your orthodontist made such a profound influence on your interest in dentistry by all means shadow him/her! The fact that you were a patient should make them more open to allowing you to shadow too!

That's what I did, in fact my orthodontist (I'm in ortho now 😳 ) is writing me a letter and I used an anecdote that happened during my shadowing experience in my PS!

Thanks for all your input guys.

Now I have another questions for y'all.

For the 'awards, honors, scholarship' page of the application: If you only have 1 entry space left, would you use it to list the fact that you were put on the Deans list back in freshman year OR would you use it to list an 'excellence prize' you won in Biology and Chemistry BACK IN GRADE 11 (High school)??

no high school awards!

you don't have you fill every spot, it just trivializes your real accomplishments

Uhhhh? I wouldn't but thats me....You probably already have some great things in your application. If only one space is left, your application is going to be stellar.

 Clicking back and forth, "one, or two?" the optometrist whisked me away into a melodic enchantment of perception. For the first time in my life, everything just seemed so clear and I knew, right then, my calling had finally found me...With every fiber of my being, beyond a shadow of a doubt I know I will be the best optometrist ever and help all the poor people who can't see. blah blah blah...
