Am i going to have a hard time understanding O-chem? My professor said that

Well, the thing is that we are learning about molecular and electron geometries in gen chem(VSEPR, and other theories), and my prof said that "if you understand this, then you'll love organic chemistry!" I do not understand this at all!! I'm really worried!

I wouldn't worry about it. I did fine in OChem after a not so fun year with Gen Chem.

I sucked at General Chemistry and am currently doing fairly well in Ochem, need an 87 on my final for an A!

Just be very aware of where electrons are going to be moving, that's important for mechanisms...

Heh. That stuff is covered in chapter 1 of o chem and you really don't have to look at it much after that. Or at least we haven't looked at it much after chapter 1 my o chem 1 class.

get some flashcards out and memorize

thing = bond,e-, not double bond

2 things = sp hybridized = linear

3 things = sp2 = trig planar

4 things = sp3 = tetrahedral

that's all i know and I scored 92% on my last orgo midterm when the class average was 70%

if you need to know it, the professor will teach it (or skim over it at least) in class. You can take it from there

You do NOT need that crap for organic chemistry, the MCAT*, medical school, life, anything. I never understood one bit of it and turned out fine.

* Ok I guess technically it may be on the MCAT but unless you're gunning for a 15 on PS you can probably forget it about it and it won't hurt you

for general ochem1 and 2, you wont need to really know any of that to do well.

now if you want a total mind fck, go into advance chem and learn about all that stuff.

In my opinion, molecular orbitals/geometry/hybridization don't make much sense as they're presented in Gen Chem. I didn't get it then. But once you get into Organic, you re-learn that stuff applied to organic molecules, and it makes TONS of sense.

As long as you survive Gen Chem you'll be ok. Organic is pretty much like pressing a 'reset' button on your chem knowledge, so it doesn't matter what you take in with you.

Am I the only one that thought electronic and molecular geometries were really easy? Then again, my Gen Chem class is mostly concepts, not plug-and-chug math. We spend more time theorizing and talking about behaviors of particles rather than just memorizing the math formulas. I like it better this way because I can now pretty much just look at a chemical formula and make snap assumptions as to how the particles behave: It's shape, polarity, solubility, its forces, etc. It all seems to come together.

lol are you serious? Chill out. You'll find out when you get there. And if it turns out that you are having trouble, then just study harder and get tutoring!

No, the professor is wrong 😛 I didn't understand that stuff when I learned it, but Organic was my favorite class in all of undergrad (+ best grades).

WTF! I want to take that orgo class! That was covered in the first week of class, and he didn't even bother testing us on it

We didn't even cover it in the first week of class! He just expected us to remember it from gen chem. 😱

QFT a million times over. I don't even really recall relearning VSEPR in organic really, at least not as VSEPR, but some point along the line I picked it up, and it's just completely logical.

its just drawing pictures....picture A follows this arrow over these funny lines and symbols/letters and becomes picture B + C02 + H20 LOL
