First and foremost, I apologize if anything that you are about to read makes no sense. I'm so tired right now =.=

Honestly, this forum was the biggest eye opener in my life. I live and attend high school in BC, Canada and I am grade 12 at the moment. After going through a few threads on this forum I was amazed at some of the stats of others. I have no idea what it is like wherever everyone else is from but here in Canada nobody really gives a **** about grades until senior year. Since the interim report of senior year is what gets you into universities and the grades from other years really don't matter. Plus, in many schools including my own we barely offer any AP courses (not that I have time to take any anyway)

I've recently discovered my interest in sciences and health care and I am definitely going to pursue a career in that area. I am making the grades, high enough to go to the best schools in Canada and my extra curriculars are not bad. I'm just wondering if starting to volunteer at pharmacies, hospitals now, near the end of my senior year is late compared to everyone else.

Thanks in advance everyone

PS: I have so many questions but with almost nobody to consult. If anyone here, preferably currently attending school in the US, wouldn't mind answering some of my question in more detail, it would be greatly appreciated.

1) Grades: You can get into the best medical schools with just going to a no-name state school. I got interviews at top 20s and I went to a no-name school. Yes, there is an advantage, but it is overrated. Just focus on getting into college, and it doesn't need to be Harvard.

2) ECs: You are not "late" at all, and have plenty of time until you start college. At this point you are early.

hope that helps! 🙂

P.S. You should change your status from "Resident." In this context, it refers to someone who has graduated medical school and is in a training program at a hospital.

I would agree with ishchayill, at this point you are early. The question you sould be asking your self is, Which country do you plan on practicing medicine? The answers to your questions would probably depend on that.

Volunteering in highschool does't count when applying to med school. If you start as soon as you graduate you will be ahead of most people.

Don't stress high school. Concentrate on getting into a college which you will be comfortable at and getting good grades/EC's there. Med schools are concerned about your college activities, and will not ask about your high schools EC's or grades.

If I can help with your other questions, feel free to PM me.

As long as you get into college man, you can get into any medical school you want. Remember, with hard work and determination, anything is possible.

I know for a fact that in Canada, study in health care is restricted to citizens and permanent residents only. What is the international acceptance like in US? I heard that only 50 schools even consider international applicants let alone accepting them. How does one even get citizenship in general?

The truth is that most medical schools don't really care about what you did or didn't do in high school. You still have a summer, and 4 years to build up a EC resume. What they are looking for is that you care about your community and other people and aren't just in it for the $$ (Ha) By volunteering in a medically related setting you are also hopefully gaining experience into the life of medicine.

I started volunteering at a ER in my senior year, did that until I got my EMT-B cert and now am volunteering with my local fire department as a medic. I am now in the interview process for a job as a ED Tech in the same ED that I was working at.

Just do well on the government exams. Then, apply to UBC, Uvic, or Simon Fraser.

http://bc.onlineschool.ca/ has some AP courses if you want to take them online.
