I’m a high school sophomore interested in pursuing a future health-related career (long-term goal: neurosurgery), and NYU is my top college choice. I was hoping to get some insight into what NYU looks for in terms of extracurriculars and volunteering for students interested in medicine.
Right now, my activities include the math team, the Math Honor Society, and the trivia team. I know these are somewhat on the lighter side, but within the next week, I am going to begin volunteering at a nearby university hospital, where I could be going 3–4 days a week. I am also planning to get CPR certified.
I have the opportunity to get connected with NYU Langone as well as Stony Brook University Hospital, since my friend’s parents work at both. Does NYU prefer to see involvement with its own hospitals and facilities rather than others? If so, is it worth prioritizing Langone over another hospital?
On the academic side, I currently have a 91 unweighted GPA and a 100 weighted GPA. My GPA has been on an upward trend, and these numbers reflect my freshman-year grades as well as the average of my Q1 and Q2 (in-progress) sophomore grades. I am currently taking 3 APs and 3 Honors courses.
Does NYU place special importance on Regents exam grades, or is that more of a CUNY/SUNY-specific factor?
I have had excellent regents grades 100,99,98,97,91 on Geometry, French, Earth Science, Living Environment (Biology) and Algebra I. I will be taking 5 more Regents this year, and my final one next year (good riddance..)
And finally, any extra NYU-specific ways to better my application would be greatly appreciated
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!
TL;DR
Highschool sophmore, neurosurgeon/NYU goals, NYC Area, wanting recommendations on what to do to better my ecs.
