It seems to me that everybody is retaking the mcat who is reapplying. I did pretty good 31. And I took it after my sophmore year therefore I have forgotten alot of stuff and don't really think I need to take it again.

Anybody else there in my shoes. With a 4.0, 31 and a funny name. 🙂

I am going to take a little nap. Maybe when I wake up someone will respond to my post by then.

are you guys reapplying becuase you haven't gotten into your school of choice, or because you haven't gotten in at all? Pelican- I thought that you had gotten in somewhere already.

pelican, no need to shout!

People only retake the mcat when that is a fault in their application. If one has a high mcat and doesn't get in, he/she just has to fix the other problem, whatever it may be. For you, I would suggest applying to all of your state schools and some lower tier schools, just to be on the safe side. Hopefully you'll get in soon though!

If I have to reapply, I won't take take the MCAT in August. I will, however, likely prepare for a retake in April. I got a 36, which I am very happy with, but my writing sample was an "L" and it has me concerned. I know that my numeric score would most likely fall in a retake, which is why I am so pissed about written portion. Oh, well, if I get off my waitlist, none of it will matter anyway 🙂

Retaking the MCAT is the ONE thing I don't want to do while reapplying. I got a 29, which is decent, but a really skewed score. Aside from applying really late, I think my score breakdown is what is holding me back.

i reapplied without retaking the MCAT. pelicanman, you have a 31--that's a good score, so there's no need for you to retake it. as long as your scores are still valid (many schools won't accept scores more than three years old) then you're fine in that department.

don't retake the MCAT just because of your writing score!!!! the writing samples don't matter to anyone. i know people with low writing scores (L and M) who still got into med school--i think that as long as your personal statement is well-written, adcoms often check a low writing score up to sloppy handwriting, since the MCAT is timed, people rush to finish, and the scorers can't give you a high score if they can't read your essays.

I scored a 35M on the MCAT. An interviewer asked about the M. She phrased the question something like "You have well-written essays, a very high verbal score on both the MCAT and GRE, and are very articulate in person. Why did you score an 'M' on the writing sample?" I replied "I don't have a clue". She came back with "I don't have a clue why they even have a writing sample" and we quickly moved on to other topics. I got accepted.

L, schmelL. You'll get in. Don't risk hurting that super impressive 36 by retaking to improve what is more than likely the least analyzed portion of your application. Best of luck...

SeaGulz- You would be crazy to retake just because of your writing score. A 36 is freakin' awesome. I think you're going to have to focus on other aspects of your application like personal statement, secondaries, experience and interview skills. I'm not on any admissions committee, but I can guarantee that your MCAT is NOT going to keep you out of medschool. Look, I got a lower score on the than you and I also got an L on my writing sample, and I've received several acceptances. I think I'm a pretty good writer, but sometimes you just have to laugh it off. As an admissions member I would question your true motivations if you took the test again. Kind of like retaking a Chemistry class because you got a B instead of an A (see Cerberus's retake post). Don't let those AAMC graders (or your ego) bully you into retesting.

Hey, Pelican Man,
I have 3.9/31 but many of my classes are from CC, and I havent applied yet, but will retake the MCAT tomorrow in hopes to get it up to 33 maybe - b/c I am only going to apply to Florida schools and they have been extremely stringy with acceptances 🙁

Thanks to those who have kindly offered your opinions. I have no advisor, so it helps to get the advice of those who know their way around the admission ropes. I will apply early decision to GW this fall if I don't get off the waitlist, so I hope the April MCAT won't even be an option. Otherwise, I will take your words to heart and think very carefully before I commit to a retake.

TommyGunn04: I thought about having the writing sample rescored. In fact, I had my thirty dollar money order ready to be sent to AMCAS, but I hesitated and then forgot. Now, it is too late <img border="0" title="" alt="[Frown]" src="frown.gif" />
