Hello All,
I wanted to get your opinion on what i should do regarding a problem i'm having!! I'm having the hardest time finding an OD to write me a letter!! I have 6 yrs experience in opt, but stopped working 3 yrs ago to move (San Diego to IOWA!) and go back to school. I've been trying to track down any of my past 3 employers, but have had absolutely no luck! (They've either moved, retired or just fallen off of the face of the earth!)
I'm sitting here watching everyone around me get interviews and i'm starting to freak out !!! 😱 Do you think i'll be up a creek waiting to complete my file by mid-late Oct? I'm kicking myself as i should have started getting the letters last year, but I just assumed I wouldn't have this much trouble finding a doc!
I was also wondering if anyone has ever been in this situation, and if so what did you do to get out of it... Right about now i'm open to any ideas as i'm tapped out. 😕

"with 6 votes, you ARE the weakest link.... good bye!"

My letter from an OD was from one I had met only twice and spent a total of like 5 hours with. Just go and find someone to observe and ask them for a letter. Don't worry about your application not being in right now. (well do it as soon as possible) but its not the end of the world that it isn't in now. I think I didn't get mine in until octoberish maybe even november... it was a long time ago...

I definately do not think think you are too late. In fact, i think you should sent in your apps asap without the Opt. reference letter. I did...and just received an interview (i doubt the ref got there in time). There are so many other things the committee can consider.

I agree with Fedz. Send in what you have now. Most application periods last until like march or even april anyway, so that def gives you some time to find a letter. I'm still waiting on one of my professors to finsih writing a letter for me but i've also been asked to two interviews. I think the Optometrist letter is just to make sure that you've had a first hand look at the profession and know that optometry is something for you.

Hey Guys... Thanks for the awesome advice! I actually have some good news! Maybe 2 or 3 hours after writing the post, I gave it one more shot at calling one of the places I used to work (to ask another of my old co-workers if she had a forwarding number for one of the doc's i used to work for)... and to my surprise she did!!!!! He was actually very glad to hear from me and very willing to write me the letters i needed 😀 !!! whew, I've surely learned my lesson on procrastination... big time!

That is great news.

good luck keara 🙂 it's never too late.. definitely just send in everything you have even if it's not complete.
