Hello, I got a Bachelor in Chemical Engineering in May 2008 and am currently doing Masters in Chemical Engineering in the same institution as I did my Bachelor. I am now 26 years old. I know this might be a silly question, is it too late for me to give a shot for getting into dental school? I am in New York area, and which of the four schools is good? Columbia, NYU, Stony brook and Buffalo? I am planning on taking the test in end of August, is it too late?

well, it's never too late... i don't know what the prereqs are for chemical engineering, but as long as you have the basic bio, chem, orgo, and physics, you should be good for a lot of schools

26 years old is not late at all. Just think about how much better off you'll be with a Dental degree. You'll be ~30 years old when you graduate and some people at that age still don't know what to do with their life. It's a huge accomplishment and I believe that you're never too old for anything.

Since you're living in the NY area I guess you know where all those schools are located and the area they're in. So whichever location suits you better I believe will be fine. I'm planning on applying to Columbia and NYU. NYU is the one I really want to get in to but I'm still unsure about it since I live in Florida and I'll be far from my family. But four years in NYC sounds like a lot of fun.

If you're planning on applying for the 2010 cycle and you want a better chance of getting in to Dental school then I think taking the DAT in August is a bit late. But, if you have a good GPA and extracurriculars I think you'll be fine. I'm applying for the 2010 cycle and I'm taking the DAT in June. I'm not ready for it though.

Keep me posted on how things on...Good Luck.

What are the extracurriculars as examples? besides the shadowing experiences?

Thank you again!!!

volunteer work. Do you take part in the community? Do you have a job? What do you do on your free time? Have you done anything that can aid you in manual dexterity?

For me, I have done some shadowing but I still need some more hours. I've done about 60 hours of volunteer work. I currently work as a server at a restaurant during the weekends while I go to school. I also do a lot of cooking/baking and I have been playing the piano since I was 6 years old and I took piano lessons for 12 years.

Hope this helps

If you live here in NY then you know the cuty and the suburbs. Stonybrook is probably the best school and cheapest out of those 4 however it is on long island. Columbia is up in washington heights (a murder a day-dont go out to play) and it is very clinially challenged. Then you have NYU which is a crappy school and rediculously overpriced. Finally you have Buffallo which is in freaking buffalo, where it snows a foot like every other day. Each school has its flaws and you need to determine which school works best for you.

Is NYUD really that bad? I have heard a lot of positives from that school. Including their facilities, staff and curriculum

Only drawback to NYUCD is its price tag. Aside from the price NYUCD is an excellent school....come and see for yourself.....also NYUCD is located in the heart of the city unlike stonybrook which is like 2 hours away from the rest of civilization....visit all of the schools...you never know which one you'll falll in love with.....NYUCD is definitely an excellent school....you have to come see the place!!
