Hi guys, I just registered for this website and i'm finding it really helpful.

I've wanted to go to a dental school for quite some time now, and I just started studying for the DAT. I am a junior in udergrad and i have been doing research in biology department for about 2 years now.

Unfortunately, my GPA hasn't been too hot (it always lingered at around 2.9), but since 2 semesters ago, i been getting 3.3~3.4 which include upper level science courses. I have a few more semesters go, and I am pretty sure I can keep my gpa above 3.2, 3.3....My only concern is that I have gotten some C+'s in 200 level courses before...

assuming that i won't BOMB the DAT (around 18~20, or even higher), do I even have slightest chance of making it to any dental school?

I know this is a repetitive post, but I just wanna hear someone say "YES, KEEP TRYING" OR "NO, FIND ANOTHER CAREER".

Thanks for helping out this new member guys!

Thanks

Joon

I wouldn't necessarily say I am an expert, but I think that the fact you have and upward trend will really help in saving you. I would think that if you have an upward trend plus a solid DAT then you should at least score some interviews if you apply broadly. Once you get those interviews you will be able to shine 🙂

Like I said, take my words lightly because I am far from completely knowledgeable. I got accepted into DS via deferred admit so I didn't have to go through this stressful process you guys do!

Just curious, are you applying this cycle or going to wait until next?

NYU's stats are not that different from what you are trying to accomplish. There are many people with your stats applying, so give it your best shot. Hang in there- step up and pay the price for what you really want. Good luck!

The best feedback you can get is from a school. Contact a handful and speak with an Admissions Officer directly.

Just be cautious about the feedback as many schools will tell you to apply so they can collect your application fee and pad up the stats (i.e. number of applicants). That's why you need to talk with a bunch of them.

If you can connect with an Admissions Officer, then perhaps he/she will be truthful in her words. Just insist that you want them to be brutally honest with you. Some may intentionally sugarcoat things just so they won't hurt anyone's feelings.

I can tell you just from the info you provided that many will say that the Adcom view candidates from a holistic point of view and blah blah blah, providing a false sense of hope.

You can decide for yourself by looking at the average GPAs and DAT scores of incoming students. Ignore the broad ranges on the low end because they belong to legacy students with serious connections. Also, the few low outliers from legacies will not affect the average GPAs/DAT so they are pretty accurate indicators.

Good luck.

You should make sure that you are above average in dental experience and community service. Research will help a lot too. If you haven't started your personal statement do so now. It's amazing to me how many people write it the last minute. With average stats you need to stand out in some way. You can do it.

Without a doubt, the two most important things are GPA and DAT. Everything else is a distant 3rd. Right now you have the most control over the DAT. Keep that GPA climbing and study your butt off for that test. It's more important than anything else because they wont read any of your extra stuff when your app is in the trash can along with 1,000 other apps that didnt make the cutoff.

As far as the scores on the DAT, shoot for no score below a 20. Apply early and to many schools (at least 15 or so) and you will have a decent shot. Good luck.

Hey pdizzle! good to see you!

When are you going to open the website for 2012 appicants ??

By the way, thanks for the wonderful website!
