I was wondering how long amalgam should be mixed for when using a mortar and pestle (and not a machine) before packing. A ballpark estimate would be great! Thanks!

Why use a mortar and pestle? I usually just pop the capsule in my mouth and chew rapidly for 10-15 seconds, (time may vary and is dependent upon chewing efficiency, temperature of oral environment, saliva, etc.). In all seriousness though, why would you ever want to triturate amalgam without a machine? Even if you used slow-set, I don't think you could get a homogenous mixture, so the strength and physical properties of the material would be compromised.
***NOTE***Do NOT EVER put amalgam in mouth! Above reference was a JOKE.
Actually, amalgam is a great restorative material when larger restorations are indicated. They are also less technique sensitive compared to composite resins. So n00bs in your class can complete them and get good evaluations from their faculty.
