another weird thread for me to start. but instead of starting a million threads on each part, i thought it would be more organized and helpful if y'all posted ALL OF YOUR Q's here.

I will graduate in May 2005, and I was wondering what the convention was for filling in dates of education on the AMCAS. When it says "dates of attendance" do I put August 2001 to May 2004, or do I put August 2001 to May 2005? That is, do I enter current completed attendance, or do I include my final year of school?

It's already time to fill out the AMCAS? *Shudder*

I came here to post the exact same thread! Good job Docmemi

Here's my question:

Regarding Parent/Guardian info:

I am not on speaking terms with my father, should I list him or just list my stepdad or just leave both off and list my mother?

Entering August 2001 to May 2005, since you will be attending school until May 2005.

I think you have to list whichever provides/provided support for you either growing up or while in college. I'm in a similar situation...I just put whereabouts "unknown" and leave it at that.

I'm not an expert on this, but I would put the person(s) who you identify most with as your parent/guardian. i.e. person you would contact in an emergency and/or who claims you as a dependent

Only if you're paranoid and want to submit on the first possible day in June ;)

i agree...i remember putting the date i expected to graduate. but a word of caution, see if when you print out the transcript request what dates are on it. have you checked out the instruction booklet yet? http://www.aamc.org/amcas

I'm trying to enter my coursework, but my UCSB transcript just lists my classes as "ASTRO 1", and "ENGL 2". Does that mean I just enter "1" and "2" as the course numbers? Since I was a freshman at the time, of course I took lots of courses that were numbered with a 1. I only went there for one quarter, in 1991, and maybe they've changed their numbering system since then, but based on this transcript (which was printed in 1996, and yes, I've requested a new one), I have no idea what to put in for course numbers.

Anyone know?

I would just enter the entire course number as ENGL2. I did that for my classes (eg ENGL101).

Also, can anyone tell me if I should list my courses for next year and then click the "future" box and leave the grade blank or should I not enter my course list for next year?

Arg.

After entering my 1st two years of coursework on AMCAS, I find that I did my term designations wrong--said it was a 4-4-1 system when it was actually a semester system.

1) Does it matter? Should I just leave it this way?
2) Is there any way to change the term designations, or is deleting & starting over the only option?

Isn't this fun?!

Does anyone know what to do for joint enrollment...is that considered high school or college ??

Should you enter courses you are taking in the fall ??

mdsadler,
I'm pretty sure that you should post your upcoming semester classes and click the currrent/future button (at least that's what I'm planning on unless I hear otherwise).

Here's a question that's been bugging me. They ask for an official transcript from every institution you've attended. Does going to grad school at the same university you did you undergrad count as one "institution"? All my grades from grad and Ugrad are on the same transcript, but I don't want them waitin' around for a second transcript if grad school is considered a different institution.

when is the amcass available for filling in stuff? I thought it was June 1...

Questions

1. I volunteer a lot of my time as a software engineer for a non-profit healthcare organization. I'm not sure if this should be classified as "Community Service/Volunteer - Not Medical/Clinical" or "Community Service/Volunteer - Medical/Clinical". I can see how this is not medically related but on the other hand part of it is so I'm not too sure.

Suggestions?

2. Paid employment. I was a student computer specialist for 1.5 years for USGS. Is this relevant to include? It was during school.

Thanks

Its been available for a couple days. June 1 is the day we all hope to click submit and prepare for an onslaught of secondaries.

OMG i am really behind then...

Why do they do this to us? I think its to weed out those ppl who would just leave at the sight of a HUGE application

it really isnt that bad at all.
if you already have your personal statement ready...then the thing that takes the most time is inputting your grades. give it a good week to finish everything and not having to rush anything.

Are there specific time periods when we can and can not access our amcas information? I'm trying to log in but I get nothing when I enter my user name/ password. I'm all motivated to enter some grades but this is a huge obstacle.

i dont think so...i just logged in. try again. :(

i have a crazy theory that the process itself is made relatively tough to weed out people who would give up easily...on amcas, secondaries, interviews, and WAITING so long. just hang in there. and hey, keep reminding yourself that other people have done it... SO YOU CAN TOO !

alright...I switched browsers and they seem to prefer IE over Opera. For some reason I couldn't log in with opera...hmm.

Actually you can use Opera but you have to type in your login info, then click on the user name box so the text prompt is there then click on "login" with your mouse. I am being SERIOUS....AMCAS CAN GO FORNICATE ITSELF

This thread reminds me of the good ol' days with soonerpillow et al. What was it called? Something like "The AMCAS 2004 Help Thread." Good times.

Hey Pushkin,
Just an FYI since your UCSB, have you set up your file at the premed office and gotten the LORs rolling in? It helps to have that part ready to go.

Question: when filling out post-secondary experiences, if I am planning on continuing an experience through next year, how should I fill out the dates? Should I fill out the "ending" date as June 2004, since that is when I will turn in AMCAS, or as June 2005 (when I will truly end it)?

CALLER: It was like a college fraternity prank that stacked up naked men?
LIMBAUGH: This is no different than what happens at the Skull and Bones initiation and we're going to ruin people's lives over it and we're going to hamper our military effort, and then we are going to really hammer them because they had a good time. You know, these people are being fired at every day. I?m talking about people having a good time, these people, you ever heard of emotional release?

Wow what a dip****

When requesting to send my transpripts, I have the option of either waiting till the semester's grades are posted (Mid-May) or another 8-10 weeks after my comencement for them to recognize that I earned my degree on the transcript. 8-10 weeks after may would take me into july or even august. With the verification process takingup to 4 weeks after that, isn't that bit late? Do admission's comittee's care whether or not I my school verifies that I earned my degree? Which option should I choose? Both?

So... do we click "repeat" when we repeat the class... or also when we take it the first time (to indicated that it will be repeated later in the transcript).

Also... when is the GPA claculated?? when all grades are entered???

I would submit ASAP, and then maybe you can send updates. I am applying with end of this semesters grades, but then I have 2 more classes this summer and will finish my degree reqs then...so I will send an update at that time.

I think you are supposed to put the anticipated end date for experiences....I believe it says that in the directions at the top of the "experiences" page. At least, that's what I did.

Muy stupido question here.

So under courses taken, under "course type"--- if it was a run of the mill, letter grade course, do we need to click on any of those boxes? (the p/f, repeat, etc ones)

I guess this means i have to start writing my personal statement, too. Dammit.

nope just don't choose anything only if it were an AP course or you withdrew from it

This looks like a lot of damned schools!! I am afraid of the secondaries!!!!

my stupid questions (so far, anyway--i'm sure there's more, even stupider, questions to follow):

are independent study credits "repeats"? meaning, if i have signed up for lab work the past four quarters and received A's for it, are those subsequent classes actually repeats? i assume that they are, just making sure.

also, on the forums, you often hear "science GPA" used interchangably with BCPM GPA (as it appears on AMCAS, right?). so when you input your BCPM grades, do you omit classes from other science departments like pharmacology, microbio, physiology, etc.? in other words, is your BCPM GPA exclusively bio, chem, phy, and math? again, i assume this is so, but i just want to make sure.

thanks.

hey there,

how do we send the transcript request form from amcas along with our actual transcripts, if we send our actual transcripts electronically? at my school, we request transcripts online, and then send it electronically ourselves...so how would we include the transcript request form with it?

anyone in a similar predicament?

thanks a lot

No, all science classes taken in a science dpt are bcpm biology, chemistry, physics and math. The best bet is to read that file above. It really does answer most questions.

You need to go IN PERSON if you can with the transcript request form from amcas and have that form attached with your transcript. If not, amcas may lose the transcript..beware amcas gets what like a total of 35,000 applications? and if each applicant has two transcripts...that is a lot of transcripts.

here, saw this last night:
Do NOT designate Repeat for courses designed to be repeated (e.g., Independent Study, Thesis, Chorus, etc). See Deferred Grade.

This is in our lovely 64 page instruction manual.
Download it. It has a huge list of classes that fall under BCPM.

I was pumped to learn that Astronomy classes fall under Physics. woohoo.
