I am unsure how to classify some things after looking around here and the manual. I have taken epidemiology courses, but there is no specific classification for it in the manual. There is a public health one, but epidemiology is more of a science I think. Do you think I could list epidemiology as BCPM, and they would accept it?
Also, for undergraduate research for credit hours, should it be listed as a lecture? I don't know because technically you are doing work in a lab. Thanks!

I would think that epidemiology does not count towards BCPM and public health would be the most appropriate categorization.

"Epidemiology is the study (or the science of the study) of the patterns, causes, and effects of health and disease conditions in defined populations. It is the cornerstone of public health, and informs policy decisions and evidence-based medicine by identifying risk factors for disease and targets for preventive medicine." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epidemiology

Thanks. I have a degree in epidemiology and believe I know what it is.

So what's your question? If you know what it is, use the AMCAS course designation to find out where does epidemiology fit.

Epidemiology is not specifically listed as a subject in the course classification guide. I thought perhaps due to the statistics involved in the subject matter that it may fall under math.

Well, isn't that good for you? Do you want a freaking cookie? I just posted that there to support my claim that it would be categorized as public health.

And this response is exactly why I was hesitant to post anything in the first place.

It's okay, we're good (not sarcastic, I swear).

yeah, there are definitely some Epi courses that are more sci/stats than anything else, but I'm not sure what the classification should be. Although you can try one thing and if AMCAS disagrees they'll change it. I think you can contest it by showing the syllabus or something that gives details on what the course entails, however, that takes times and delays your application too.

i.e. molecular or genetic epidemiology - science

epidemiology methods I - stats

epidemiology of global health - public health

but yeah, hard to say.

I have taken epidemiology courses, consulting my amcas application, they were classified as public health if they said epidemiology. If they said stat or biostatistics, they were classified as math.

There were also a couple hard science courses that had biology, microbiology, genome, virus, etc. in the title of the course. Those were classified as biology, of course.
