Hi, I hope someone can please answer me this question on amcas and the august mcat box... it's gonna be a little long of a post... but i checked everywhere but can't seem to find any answer on that.. hopefully one of you knowledgeable SDNers can help.. thanks in advanced. :]

Ok. Say if I have some score from April that is between 28 or 29 (or at most 30), and I am planning to submit my AMCAS in June with that april score anyhow to get ahead in the cycle. But then, I think there's a high chance, altho' uncertain still, that I may end up taking the August MCAT. So if I do register, I want to do it soon just so I can secure a good test center (last time mine was fulled and I was assigned to another center two hours away at first!-- they finally was able to change it to somewhere closer, but it was only much later) and say, let's disregard the fact that there's gonna be only 50% refund.

Now the question is, I don't want that to hold up my apps, especially if I were to decide later not to take it, just because I checked the august box on AMCAS. I hope they can still evaluate my apps and send me secondaries to work on. (I think they also said there on the online amcas form that "do not check the box if you are unsure." or something like that.)

So if I submit my AMCAS like that without checking that box, and later decide to really take it in mid-july, would it be too late to let the schools know? What's the most likely timeframe for rejections (i.e. outright rejection with no secondaries, or rejection after secondaries submission) to start coming in?

On the other hand, if the schools automatically know once I registered for the MCAT, then what I said above is voided. Anyone knows if schools do know that or just the amcas registra?
cos if the schools know then it probably doesn't matter anyhow when I register, or in that case perhaps i shouldn't register so soon even i really hope to get into that one test center...???....hmm... Please let me know!

Thank you.

Ultimately its your choice. But considering you can't update AMCAS on grades you get during summer session (and beyond) after clicking submit, its pretty much a done deal. Even if you were able to do that, you won't have August MCAT scores available until October, therefore by then, people will be getting secondaries and select interviews.

I don't recall there being any section to update schools about new MCAT scores on your secondaries. Not to mention schools that screen for GPA/MCAT will use your April scores once they receive your application from AMCAS around June.

Lastly, I don't think med schools know (or care) if you register for an MCAT exam. What matters is actually signing in on test day, and taking the exam.

thanks for the reply.
but i read on another thread that people are going to put in their fall term courses even they don't have grades for them?
how does that work?

You check the box "future coursework" at the bottom under special course types. You don't enter a grade. AMCAS then assigns the grade of CC which is not factored into the GPA.
