Hey guys,

I'm starting my apps on the AMCAS system in the next cycle for Fall 2014 matriculation to an allopathic medical school. How does the whole recommendation thing work? Do we have to get different recommendations for each med school we apply to or do we have the option to mix and match submitted recommendations (without seeing them of course) if we want? How many does each med school generally require?

Should we strategically choose which professors or advisors (ex.) we want to write a rec to a particular med school program we are applying to?

Thanks!

You should read the instructions or use the search function. Basically you send your letters to AMCAS and they will distribute them to the schools you've listened. However, there are exceptions where some schools may require you to send them the letter personally. Do research on the schools you're applying and they'll tell you what they want.

Choose people who can write only good things about you. If they are a little hesitant to the idea, then get off that train before it wrecks.

Thank you! I should add that I haven't looked through the system yet since I'm starting apps next year, just looking to get some advice on this before I start. I bought that MSAR 2013 book and this was something it wasn't entirely clear on.
