Hello all,

This is my first time posting after reading these forums for quite some time. I am prepping to apply to med schools this summer, but was somewhat confused about submission/completion guidelines.

First off, I will DEFINITELY be submitting my primary app within the first week of June. However, I am trying to decide between a May 23 and June 20 MCAT date. I would certainly be more comfortable with the June 20 date, but do not want to be a late applicant.

I have noticed that LizzyM gave a good rule of thumb that July 4 is a good date to shoot for, but am unclear on whether this date pertains to the latest date she recommends SUBMITTING your primary app or the latest date you would want to be COMPLETE.

As I said before, I will definitely have my primary app submitted in the first week of June. Therefore, will I still be in with the early applicants if I take the June 20 MCAT (work on secondaries before MCAT comes back and try to be complete by around August 1).

I hope that wasn't too confusing. Thanks so much guys!!

My guess is she meant July 4 for primary... I don't think most schools even send out secondaries until the middle of July. A June 20 MCAT should be just fine as long as you are pre-writing secondaries during that month break before you receive your score... AFAIK you can submit secondaries even before your MCAT score becomes official, and you will be marked complete on July 20 (+/- a few days). That is still pretty early even by SDN standards.

im having the same dilemma so i actually have a follow-up question - i also want to submit my app on the first day but am not taking the mcat until june 20th. should i submit my amcas app to just one school on the first day and then add the others after i get my score? that wont be late right? or is it better to send it to many schools on the first day in hope that some of them will send me secondaries before receiving my mcat score? i just dont want to end up receiving/submitting the secondaries late =/

I may have heard this wrong from somewhere/someone but I heard that if you submit to one school when apps open to submission and haven't done your MCAT yet, BUT if you get an MCAT score your not happy with and need to retake and want to apply the following round, your considered a re-applicant if I heard correct. So I'm taking my MCATs 5/11 so I probably won't be submitting it until I get my scores which will be mid June...

It depends on regional location, but my advice would be to sign up quickly. This varies by testing site, but there's limited seating and you may not be able to get either of those dates anywhere close to where you live at this point.

That is why you should add only one school that you are not very keen on going to. You will only be a re-applicant to that one school and not to others. Other schools will not know that you submitted an application the previous year. You won't be a re-applicant.

Ah that make sense. New news to me. Thanks!

Do schools mail the secondaries or send electronically? For those that pre-screen, how long after they receive your MCAT would you say you receive the secondary from them?

every single school I applied to sent the secondary via email. the answer to your second question varies by school.
