I was recently contacted by a representative of American Anesthesiology regarding some positions that have opened up where I live. I've never heard of this group. Anyone have any experience with this organization (the good, the bad, the ugly...). I need to start looking for a job soon.

Thanks.

I know they are drastically ramping up the acquisition efforts again. They added 14 practices in 2012 and are now cold calling groups that already turned them down within the last 2-3 years.

Gotta keep those earnings high on the stock.

Based on what I've read about the organization, it sounds like the company is essentially and anesthesia management company.

Has anyone ever worked for one of these organizations-American Anesthesiology, in particular? Any upshots to working for an AMC? What are the downsides?

I'm aware of a very large, successful group who sold their partnership to AA recently. I'm NOT aware of all of the details but this large group stated their reason was to "partner" with a larger organization, which lots of back office support and management expertise, as well as having some safety in numbers as healthcare continues to consolidate.

I have not seen a mass exodus. I'm sure the full partners took a very nice sum of money up front. I do know that they've maintained some level of bonus, incentive structure etc. They can still "trade" call and earn more money. They also still have two tiers of pay scales, those whom were the full partners, and those whom were and still are 7 a.m.-3 p.m. Mon-Fri, no call, no weekends, no holidays.

That's all I know. I've not heard a lot of rumblings about how horrible it is or anything, but I suppose it's still very very early.

I wonder how long their pain guys are going to stick around, however......

I don't know anything about the organization. I suspect that they are not making any money yet due to outlays of capital to purchase practices and give reasonable salary guarantees for the first wave of employment contracts. I suspect that they are betting big bucks that they will be able to make money in the future when they redo those employment contracts for a lot less than the current package.

Would love to hear from somebody who signed a second employment contract. Might be too early yet. Don't know how long they have been around.
